I have a 1982 924, the nose piece (bodywork in front of the hood and between the headlights) is literally smashed all to hell. Does it bolt on or is it welded in place? I thought I read somewhere 924 was welded and later cars it was removable, hope I done remember right.... _________________ 88 924S

My '79 was welded in that took a few careful drills and grinds to remove. Replacement was aligned and screwed in place. 7/10 for ease of job. _________________ '79 924.

Thanks, I will take a closer look, my initial inspection it seemed solidly attached at many points. _________________ 88 924S

I used a spot weld drill bit that I picked up at Harbor Freight and a few battery packs in my cordless drill to pull one at the local U-Pull salvage yard.
There's some behind the bumper and a couple of bolts at the sides into the front quarter panels.
The 924S and 944 panels are bolted on, so don't hesitate to use bolts to secure it, their panels are also the same up to the 944 S2 and Turbo, if that helps with your search.
There are some fiberglass versions available too, but the fit and finish can be racecar good and need a bunch of work to make "right"
Good luck! _________________ Stefan

If you have a good machine shop supply store near you then buy one of these :
There are different lengths, I use an extended number 4 to cut the spot welds. It is rigid as R. Jeremy and will cut a beautiful clean hole through the sheet metal. I have used the ghetto cheap spot weld cutters from places like Harbor Freight and they suck. If you tilt them on an angle they don't cut well or the little pilot bit in the center will snap. Weekend warrior junk.

Huh, mine still works and it cut through the weld without issue.
Perhaps it is operator error? _________________ Stefan

I guess that's the difference between people that don't mind using cheap shite and those of us that prefer quality tools. Coming from an aviation background I will always choose the latter.

Okay then.
I was just stating my experience, your attitude and tone aren't necessary, but not unexpected.
Excuse me while I see my way out as my "cheap shite" ways aren't wanted around here.

Early US model 944s have screws along the upper trailing edge (by the hood latch), but are spot welded on the under side of the lower leading edge (just above the bumper). All US model 2.0L cars are spot welded on both edges. The 924Ss I've had are all screwed in place. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

924 & early 944 noses are welded on- no screws other than the ones holding the fender to it.
The 85 & 1/2 and up 944 are screwed on.
The 944 s2 & turbo are screwed on but are a different panel than the n/a cars.
In your case there are several spot welds along the bottom & a row along the top by the hood.
What to drill with depends on how you plan to reattach it.
If you're going to spot weld it back on I would cut the structure of the donor, grind the welds from the back side & grind the welds on your panel so you leave no holes.
If you plan to bolt it back on I would use the cutter that kenodog posted.
If you plan to mig or tig it back on I would use the cutter that fiat mentioned or use a rotabroach. |

Wrong, at least in the case of the 1985 (not 85.5) 944 I dismantled. The badge panel I removed from that car was screwed at the trailing edge and welded at the leading edge as I indicated above. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
