My US "Specials" collection is now complete. Just got home from retrieving this '78 LE from Olin IA.
  • Less than 23K original miles on the clock.
  • Yes, it's a slushbox, but I figured I needed to have at least one in the collection, so why not this nicely maintained low-mileage example?!
  • Brakes are soft, will need some attention.
  • Original wheels were replaced long ago by these Carroll Shelby specials.
  • Pasha interior has a few split seams, but is serviceable until I get around to redoing the inserts.
  • Original paint
  • Original factory-applied pinstriping
  • Original foglamps
  • Original leather-wrapped 2-spoke steering wheel
  • Few dings here and there, but I think most or all of them can be serviced by a paintless ding repair specialist
  • Overall in excellent mechanical condition, everything works except the AC
There were apparently 1800 of these made worldwide, which means there should be more of these than any of the other specials except the Martini. But this is only the 4th one I've seen in the past 5 years of searching.

On with the pix:

What's special about this 'special'?

And that the chairs are broken, altough there are only 23k miles made with it...

When you say 1800 worldwide, do you mean USA?

Technically, not much. It is a typical Porsche limited or special edition in that it is almost exclusively an appearance package. Like the Martini and Sebring, there's nothing remarkable about the engine. The only performance mod was the standard package that included the sway bars. Everything else is essentially cosmetic.

That said, what makes it "special" is that it is one of four "special editions" acknowledged by Porsche in the form of exclusive advertising pieces. For me, having the Martini, Sebring, and Weissach already, it only made sense to complete the quartet by seeking out a decent example of the '78 Limited Edition.

By "broken", I assume you are referring to the split seams. The suede fabric used for these style of seats is notoriously delicate. There is virtually no wear on the suede itself. The split seams are purely due to the age of the material (38 years old now!), not due to "seat time". In fact, aside from the seam split along the bolster, the driver seat is actually in better shape than the passenger seat in this one.

The standard Limited Edition package included the following:
  • Dolomite Grey Metallic paint
  • Factory applied white-over-black pinstriping
  • Introduction of the standard 8-spoke pressure cast alloy wheels
  • Front and rear stabilizer bars
  • Fog lights
  • Leatherette with Pasha cloth inserts on the front and rear seats
  • Leather wrapped two-spoke steering wheel
  • Leather shift boot on the manual (standard)
  • Stereo speakers in the rear
  • Manual antenna
Options available included:
  • Removable top
  • Automatic transmission
  • Tinted windows
  • Air conditioner
  • Power windows
What I like about this example is that it is essentially a "fully-loaded" / fully-optioned example, including the automatic; except that it is (oddly) lacking the power windows. But it has the auto, tinted windows, A/C, and sunroof.

You are correct, these were apparently a US-only model. I missed that detail earlier.

I didn't drive it far, just around the block, because the brakes were really spongy, and it wasn't safe to do much more than take it around the block. Initial impression is that the engine is quite solid, runs very smooth, heats up and stays steady at the 1-tick mark. It was not nearly the dog I thought it would be, although my opinion may change once I get to really take it out in the spring. It was, however, a very weird sensation to sit down in the driver seat and not have a clutch pedal!

For now, I am planning to keep it original and leave the automatic in. Converting to a manual would not be difficult, and can be done "non-destructively", so that's always an option for the future. For this car, however, it is really a collector piece for me, and I will probably just take it out from time to time to enjoy it exactly as it is. I have plenty of other modified cars to thrash on the backroads!

Dammit, stop buying all of the nice cars left in Iowa. Now I'm going to need to go poach some other state if I want a special edition car.
That looks like a nice little car, I don't even mind that it's an automatic. Some times you just want to take an easy drive and not worry about shifting, it's good to have a car for each mood.

Agree 100%! I will be getting a set of the standard alloy wheels it came with for sure.

Hmmm...this is the first IA car I've purchased. Here's the rundown:

FL: 2
OH: 2
IN: 2
CA, ID, PA, SC, IL, MO, and IA: 1 each

Full story.
