Hey guys, I'm going to order a new check valve for my brake booster. I'm seeing two different kinds coming up. One that is L-shaped and only has an inlet and an outlet, and another that is also L-shaped but also has a small nipple and is designated (according to Pelican) as for cars with factory A/C, while the other one without the extra nipple is designated for cars w/out factory A/C.

Here's the rub... my car has factory A/C, but has the check valve without the extra nipple. That's the one I'm planning to replace it with, as my effectively no longer has A/C and I see no orphan vacuum line.

Any insights on this?

Here's a link that shows the two different valves:

Planning on ordering from Paragon, as their price shipped is the same as Pelican pre-shipped.

But here's the twenty-five dollar question... can I just use one of the straight (non L-shaped) ones from the earlier 924 models like this one for $13 shipped?

Yes, sure. You may need to change to a slightly longer hose though & ensure it does not kink.

Now send the $25 dollars to my paypal:
epay(at)exemail(dot)com(dot)au

Wouldn't it have been cheaper overall to just but the right part?

That should just be a 3/8" or 1/2" check valve available at any auto parts store.

IIRC it is 12mm + barbs. So 1/2" would push in OK. Good idea to replace the grommet anyway.

Still waiting on $25...

Thanks for the tips and help, guys. I wasn't sure if the booster check valve was different from standard ones.

I'll probably just order the $12 ATE valve from eBay. From what I can tell, ATE used them on just about everything and most non-eBay listings are saying the nipples are 12mm. I think I have enough slack in the hose to pull it off, but if not, I've got some new hose on hand to tackle it (which I should probably do, anyway).

RC, my PayPal account has been seized by the Feds, but I have just dispatched my carrier pigeon to Oz with the dollars. Expect him in around 18 days. He'll be thirsty, but hide your beer. He's very crude after a few.

I told him to make a left at Sydney. Or should it be a right?

I made sure to put a diaper on him, RC. Probably be full by the time he gets there, but it's the thought that counts, right?

In the end, I broke down and bought the check valve and grommet from Paragon. Not terribly cheap, but when I thought about all the work and time I've been putting into the car, I figured what the heck and bought the OEM stuff. Should be here by Wednesday. Cannot wait to get them installed and hopefully have a working booster. I will definitely post my findings.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delayed update, work has been crazy and also trying to get a bunch of things buttoned up on the new casa before winter sets in here.

The new check valve and grommet did nothing to change the braking issue. And so, just like some of you had said, it's time for the booster.

They sure are pricey from the typical Porsche sites, but I sniffed around a bit and O'Reilly auto actually sells them for around $165, which was a pleasant surprise. I'm going to order one in the next week or so and will update the post after installation.

Any tips on pulling the booster? I think there is a new gasket or bushing or grommet needed between it and the master cyl, right?

Hey guys, I know it's been a while, sorry I've been so scarce, lots of projects going at once and work has been nuts since Thanksgiving. Had the 924 in storage over the winter and just got her home last weekend.

To take up where I left off, brakes were still not working well after several bleedings, new wheel cylinders, etc., and a vacuum leak from the booster was the culprit, as several of you had mentioned. The master cyl was also leaking into the booster.

Long story short, the day after I got her home, I pulled the master cylinder and the booster and took them to a (somewhat) local shop to have them rebuilt. The guy seemed cool and ID'd them right away as looking like units he'd done for Volkswagens in the past, so that was a good sign. I'll be sure to update after I get them back and installed. He was thinking they'd be ready by Wednesday of the upcoming week. Can't wait to get them back in. Not super excited about bleeding the brakes again, but at least I am certain the bleeders aren't frozen

Here's a pic of the culprits before they went for a ride.
