I started a thread title 931 rust (that is on pause till the engine runs)... i'm diving into the engine, which ran when purchased but had no compression in cylinder 1 (the cylinder closest to the bumper).
When running it kicked out a ton of smoke (white). I pulled the spark plugs and the #1 plug was clean (no pic sorry) while the rest showed normal-ish ware. I figured it was a blown head gasket. Also when cold it would idle for a couple of minutes (~10 min) then stall and not idle there after. This lead me to think the head gasket leaked water into the combustion chamber of cylinder 1.
So, I pulled the head yesterday.

Clearly, piston 1 ran into a valve some time ago because it's dented. The cylinder wall was damage too which you can see in the image.
the head was definitely removed and repaired after the piston crash.

I bought a parts car (1981 931). The engine is supposed to be fine... but may not be...

Any thoughts on what to do next?

I bought the car from a fella in Staten Island who bought it on ebay from a guy in Maine. Pictures from the listing can be viewed here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-Porsche-924-/281723158851?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4198024143&item=281723158851&nma=true&si=e0tB4k%252BkCaCSKb5UrvPMgv6ugxc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Maybe fix the new red one and use your first one as the "parts car" if it is still as good as it looks in that listing..
