A friend of mine has an opportunity to purchase a 77 924 for almost scrap price. The car runs but the transaxle doesn't want to go into gear. He lives out state so I can't go check it out for him. Any opinions? He thinks the linkage is messed up

Opinions ? Yes. "There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche".

Pay now for a good one or pay later in sweat, blood and frustration and of course, more money.

The linkage is kind of a bitch to fix, some of the bushings are NLA so you have to modify 911 bushings. To do it correct you have to drop the bell housing and torque tube. Not usually super expensive parts wise but lots and lots of labor. Might as well plan on changing the clutch while you are in there too.

I recently replaced the linkage bushings on my 931, also snailshell gearbox.
No big deal, no big expenses...one sunday labor of fun and beers.
You need some extensions for tubular sockets...an elevator is perfect but I guess it can be done with stand, a ramp or a hole in the floor..nevertheless you need a buddy to help out with the gearbox extraction and reinstallation.

Doesn't Ideola sell all the parts needed as well as a tool designed to fix that linkage without dropping the transaxle?? http://garage.ideola.com/prod-ClutchTransKits.html
