|
|
I have always liked the Phone Dial rim design. But mine were looking old and tired and needed to be cleaned up. So I bought some Dupli-Color Hyper Silver and did my first wheel today.
Steps I followed:
1. Remove tire from car
2. Clean tire 3x and use some light sand paper to smooth out rough spots and remove glue from wheel weights
3. Remove air from tire to soften it up to put cards between the tire and rim
4. Tape up Porsche emblem
5. Give it three even light coats [wait 30 minutes]
6. Give it three light coats of clear [wait 30 minutes]
7. Put tire back on car
Looks like new again.

Nice!!
I have to do some subie "snowflake" 16" alum wheels soon, for my snows this year. I really like your card trick, I think I will copy that.
Your dials look superb. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Thanks for the nice compliment!
Even with the air out of the tire it was still pretty firm so use the palm of your hand to push the tire down around the edge of the rim. You will have to do this around the circumference of the rim while a friend sticks the cards in. _________________ MOD

It has been over a year now and my phone dials still look like new. I highly recommend that you go with Dupli-color Hyper silver. It hold up very well.
They key is prep. Take the time to:
remove the wheel
give it a solid cleaning
a bit of light sanding
clean it again
remove most of the air [to soften the tire] and place some cards around the rim and cover the tire part with some old cloths
give it a very light coat of primer - wait two hours
give it another light coat of primer - wait two hours
Same process for the paint. Give it light coats and wait a couple of hours between coats.
I put the clear coat on while the final coat of paint was still tacky. I did not wait until it was fully dry and it has held up very well. _________________ MOD

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the DC-Hyper Silver. I normally use full blown car paint but bought this instead to try on some BMW CSL wheels. Good to hear (read...) _________________ 1980 931 since 1989
