In 1979 I was one of the lucky ones as there were 400 D production cars made world wide and only 100 brought into the USA. The major differences were 928 brakes, 4 wheel disk brakes with a 5 wheel bolt pattern, front and rear stabilizing bars, Koni Shocks, transmission mounted behind the rear axle. I sold the car in 1985, one of my biggest mistakes. I wish I never had done so. I have tried in vain to find any reference to these 100 cars on the net but have never found anything about them. Does anybody know the internal porsche number to this very special model? Does anybody still have one?

AFAIK, there were only 16 bonafide factory racers. Not sure where you're coming up with those numbers.

You could order a 924 with the same M471 option as a 931 in 79-80. Usually referred to as the "S" option.

YES I DID OWN ONE OF THE 100 IN THE USA

Now for some information to all of you "know it alls"

Yes Porsche made 16 full blown d production cars from the factory, as those had all the engine modifications, roll bars no carpet etc. as those were the true D production Race cars. One could buy a kit from Porsche which the car came in I think 4 - 6 boxes and you had to then build it your self. They actually lent one of those to the dealers to drive around and to promote the car to the public. I rode in one at a DE event at Pocono race way. It was the most thriling ride of my life as we were keeping up with the 911's and even passing some on the front straight. Approxiate speed was around 160 MPH.

Mine was not one of those.

As I said it was a Sebring guards red, 5 speed with suspension modifications. IT HAD SILVER COLORED ALLOY WHEELS WITHA 5 BOLT PATTERN, NOT THE NORMAL COOKIE CUTTERS ONE FINDS ON A NORMAL SEBRING. It also came from the facory with all the ugly decal strips you can seee on the web site. I had mine removed. I bought mine from the Paul Miller dealership in Wayne New Jersey. They had 2 of them one had factory air; Mine did not as it was dealer installed.

So again I ask if anybody knows anything of these 100 cars. I called the dealership but none of the sales people had been there long enough to rember. I spoke to the service department and they remebered the cars but had no records on the service of my car as it was 31 years ago that I bought the car.

Oh yes and regarding the person who said he had one "right here" that was a 924 turbo not a D Production, as:
1) it was the wrong color,
2) it had front scoop on the hood,
3) it had front air scoops in the front under the hood and below the headights.

The 924 S model came later as I think those had a 944 engine in them not the lousy 924 engine that mine had.

Not disagreeing, just stating that all the options you mentioned could be ordered as the M471 Sport option package for any 924 in 79-80.

That's a fine way to ingratiate yourself to the community

What you're describing does not sound like a D-Production at all. It sounds like the so-called 1979 924 "S", which was not the same thing as the Sebring, nor the same thing as the later 2.5L 924S.

Sorry, can't shed any light on numbers, in particular because it's not clear exactly which variant you're describing.

Could be that someone ordered a 79 Sebring with the M471 Sport option.

http://www.924.org/models/Sebring.htm

The M471 option was VERY expensive and some dealers had trouble selling cars that came that way from the factory. Maybe a dealer spun a yarn or two?
