Quick question (maybe) about the cooling of my 87 924s.

When my vehicle is in motion..My temperature gauge tends to run in the middle. From time to time (warm, hot, or cold weather) it will bump up to about 3/4 before it quickly drops down to a 1/4 and levels off again at 1/2.

While in the garage I had the hood up and witnessed the cooling fans engage when the temp of the engine got to a little over a 1/2. (so I know they at least work)

Today I stopped at an ATM machine. (disengaged the transmission) and got my coin. When I looked down the temperature was climbing over 3/4. As soon as i put vehicle in 1st. the temperature dropped down to 1/2. (I see this happen from time to time when car is at idle, but it doesn't happen all the time ) (Outside temperature was 76F)

I have read that when my key is in the ACC position the cooling fans should cut on.. tried today and they don’t.

Any recommendations on where to check for a problem?
Solenoid, thermostat ect.?

Previous owner has receipts for new water pump and coolant hoses. (But don’t really know the reputation of the fella that did the work)

I appreciate any help you can provide.

Neill

If the contacts on the back of the gauge are dirty or corroded the needle will jump all over the place, so I would check those first.

I noticed today that the fans don't seem to cut on at idle. (Well didnt this morning after 25 minute commute home). I would guess they intermittently cut on during normal driving giving me the jumps in temperature.

Solenoid for fans maybe?

The fans are triggered by a thermo switch in the radiator.

The fans should only come on when the gauge reads slightly past the third mark when idling.

The fans should never come on when driving and the gauge should stay steady at the second mark when in motion.

If the gauge is bouncing around, then it's possible that it's readings are incorrect and the fans might be working fine but the car isn't as hot as the gauge suggest, so try cleaning the grounds.

If the fans are not coming on at idle, then check the spade terminals on the thermo switch as they get loose over time.

Make sure your under engine tray is in place (should run from the bottom of the radiator to the front crossmember).

Otherwise, it sounds like it is working like it should.

Guys, he has said twice that that the temperature is jumping around while the car is in motion. That is not normal.

This sounds like the fans are cycling on and off probably while he is driving slowly at low rpms. Sounds normal especially if it is an automatic.

In his second post he referred to it as "normal driving". When my grounds were dirty my car did the same thing, and I even pulled over once because the gauge was in the red, but the engine was still ice cold... took only a few minutes to fix and it's been fine for 5 years now.

Which grounds did you clean to resolve the issue?

Haha, actually those were perfect when I removed my 924S engine...

I cleaned the ones on the back of the gauge and the crown ring up behind the fuse box. They didn't look dirty, but did the trick!

Thanks for all the responses guys! I'll start with the gauge, to see if that changes anything.
Trying to get used to 'normal' in the 924. Was warned by friends and previous owner that overheating the 924 will cause sever damage. I'm probably just overly sensitive to the motion of the temp gauge. Worries me when I see it about to hit the red at a stop light. (I usually take it out of gear so I'm not holding the clutch the entire time I wait). But if that's normal.. I'm good with it! The less work the more I get to enjoy it!

Thanks again,
Neill
