I've been entertaing the idea of creating a modern day 931 using an 87 924 and installing a 951 drivetrain. I've followed the thread on this and the idea looks daunting.

What about taking a 951 and jsut installing 924 fenders and quarter panels and also installing a 931 hood and front grill panel. The whole job could be done by a body shop with basically the little effort on the part of the owner (me).

What are your comments on this route to get a modern 924 Turbo?

Do it and let's find out which approach is less daunting

Seriously, I think it comes down to whether you prefer to spend time effort money on body work or mechanical work. Personally, I hate body work, and it's hard to get a decent paint job for much less than $2500-$3000, to say nothing of the prep work up front.

Yup...I would farm out the body work and write a big check.

I want to take my current 81 931 redo the interior in black and white Pascha with sport seats and keep the car Guards red. It would mostly a car show sort of sunday driver.

Then I'd like to build a modern 924 turbo...951 with 924 body panels or a 924 with turbo drivetrtain.....then replace the hood and front vented panel with ones from the original 931. For the seats and interior I'd like to get the stock sport seats and interior recovered in Pascha that is done like this(see photo below).

And then park them side by side at a car show. I figure that would be a very cool display.

But if its a modern day 931, why go with the old 951 engine?

Think of how Porsche would approach the task now.
There are loads of 1.6 - 2.0 engines out there.
1.6 turbos make more than 177HP now even with emissions crap and lean tune.

It would be interesting to see a lightweight modern turbocharged powerplant in a 931....
