|
|
I am going to collect the parts for a front suspension refurb on my late 931. The front struts and the tie rod ends have been done recently by PO.
I have newly rebuilt calipers and fresh /pads/fluid/brake hoses. Wheel bearings are good. I will eventually order the parts below and paint the A arms.
Front and rear A arm bushings
Ball joints
inner and outer sway bar bushings.
Any other WYIT jobs I should be thinking about? _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

Inspect inner TREs. Inspect steering ujoint. Clean and lube steering column bearing. Inspect rack boots. Grease rack. Verify rack adjustment. Seam weld and powder coat a-arms. While wheels are off, clean thoroughly and inspect for cracks. Inspect brake bleeders for caps. Buy new locking nuts for crossmember-to-control arm bolts. Inspect O2 sensor wiring, insulation around plug at cross member. Replace O2 sensor if age unknown. Check tightness of all turbo fasteners. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Thank you sir, excellent list.
While looking at the PET I saw that the inner TRE is the whole TR. I did some research and came across this PN from an old post of yours
for the inner TRE

2 of these would be correct for my car, yes? _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

I have 1980 and am having a hell of a time finding control arms (A-Arms) for it. I called Paragon yesterday who carries arms for later models, but would require modification and welding. I'm posting because I've heard A-Arms from VW's fit, however, no one seems to mention years part numbers or anything useful regarding the cross over - I checked the 'cheaper parts alternatives' post, but the parts for the Golf I are unavailable in the States.
Anyone know where I can find new control arms for a 1980 (or earlier) that don't need modified? Or are we just screwed any buy the newer ones, cut the end bit off and seam weld it back onto the end of the control arm? Please advise! Cheers! _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

Are you interested in used ones? Do you have a front sway bar? _________________ '83 944 Track car.

You can buy new front control arms from Blackforest Industries for about $21 each. Remove the old ones and zip cut the old sway bar brackets off then have them re-welded onto the new arms. Stich weld the seams while you are at it and paint/powder coat. Voila, new arms for less than a hundy... _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

As discussed in that thread, the only difference between the left and right is in the included tie rod end, which doesn't fit our cars anyway.
However, even though it does fit, you can turn the steering wheel too far, which can cause issues, because the stops on the rack don't fit with those inner tie rod ends. _________________ 78 924 NA

I would prefer new ones, but if you have a good set of used ones please send me a message! Options would be good right now!
It appears the previous owner parked the car in the grass for a long period of time causing the control arms to rust. I wouldn't even consider driving it on the road. The bit that needs seam welded on is shot on the drivers side and in fair - condition on the passenger side. The control arm on the drivers side is bent on the back half, which might explain why the front clip of the car appears to be pinched - maybe he ran it straight into a curb to get that kind of damage? It appears to be solely isolated to the control arm. Have a look!
I'm assuming I will have to custom make the brackets attached to the control arm from steel plate and seam weld them on considering mine are shot?

Holy chit!!! How's the front crossmember? I have a set of used control arms that are in much better shape, just a little surface rust. From a 931. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Haha! I told you it was bad mate =) I think he ate a curb, there are abnormal dents in the floorboards, the front clip appears to be slightly pinched (body lines just need adjusted) and obviously the control arm took the brunt of it.
The front cross member is straight thankfully. Can you send me photos of the control arms you have Grenadiers? _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

| If none of those a-arms workout I have a pair from a 944 that are in pretty good shape I'll let go pretty cheap. They do need new ball joints but other than that they look good. |
