Noticed yesterday that my Ballast Resistor above the radiator on my 1978 924 is rotten. First of all what does it do and where can I get one. The number on it is beru wz18-2f _________________ 1978 924

It's used to run the radiator fan at slow speed when the ignition is off and the radiator is still hot. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

According to RC I believe it is a 5.2 ohm, 50 watt resistor. I found one somewhere, maybe Automotion for about $17, but bought a 5 ohm 50 watt from Allied Electronics for $5 also available on Ebay. bought a couple of extra, but am in Mexico for the winter so can't send you one. I mounted it to the front cross member. I had to drill out the non-solderable steel connections for some very small bolts, 1.5 or 2 mm. _________________ Mike

I am going to revive this post because I still have not located a ballast resistor for my 1978 924. I posted pictures of the car on pelican under the heading Pictures of my cars, and pictures of the part I am looking under the title What is this. There are two parts listed in the -79 PET. The first part is 477 905 053 (superseded to 477 905 053 A) both of which are NLA. The second part is 477 905 052 (superseded to 477 905 052 A). Both of the 052 parts are showing with prices listed in Porsche's inventory, which is usually a good sign that they're still available, but no guarantee.
Now, the tricky part is that the 052 part is good for chassis 92471-05387 onward...so you will need to check your VIN.
I believe that the 053 number is for the one that goes on the radiator, and the 052 number is for the later setup where they are screwed onto the firewall under the dashboard, but I'm not positive on this, and PET is not very instructive. I also do not know if the parts are interchangeable. Both parts are less than $26 according to my online catalog. Let me know if you want me to check into availability.
{EDIT}
Another clue is whether your car has A/C. The 052 part is designated as being for the M573 option, which is factory A/C. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

ideola you are a fountain of information. My car does have AC. Any help you can give me would be great. I am not sure what PET is.. So if the parts are not interchangeable I will have to find someone with a 1978 924 with AC that is parting the car out. _________________ 1978 924

Looks like Ideoli and I were typing at the same time. I show the 52A part number as $24.94 and is the one needed for the 573 option. My guess is either one will work, just have to mount and wire it. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

It looks the 053 is for non AC cars.

Paul, I just noticed that you have owned and repaired 924s since 1977 ( The year I got out of the Air Force ). Have you ever had to deal with this resistor in the past.
Everything is pointing to the 052 resistor but I don't see the ohm value listed anyplace. I beleive mine has 1,8 stamped into it. I went down to the Electrical Engineers here at work and they are not sure what 1,8 refers to. I did get 15 minutes of how a fan is powered by a 12v battery and some other stuff made my mind glaze over.
So does the 1,8 pertain to the ohm value of the resistor. _________________ 1978 924

If you look at your VIN, you will see that it falls after the range that I listed above. So according to both PET and Porsche's online dealer catalog, the 052 part is the correct one for your car, particularly since your car has A/C.
As noted above, the 052 part has been superseded to 052A. As noted above, both parts are showing up in Porsche's online dealer catalog, so it's possible (but not guaranteed) that you can get either part. I will check with my Porsche contact to verify availability and pricing.
