80 N/A with auto trans. Turns 4000rpms / 75mph and that's with 18" wheels on the car. Running back and forth to work on the backroads the car is a joy to drive but on the highway it's screaming away.

My question is how much work would it be to put a standard trans in? Is it worth the time I would put in it? Does the 944 standard trans fit? I know I would have add a pedal, clutch master, shifter, linkage, flywheel, clutch and of course the trans. I can get all the 944 parts cheap.

I'm not looking for light speed, just a good cruising gear. If the auto had a over drive or even a lock-up converter it probably would be fine.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Might i suggest changing for some lighter/smaller wheels to remove some of the load on the engine?
It might also be cheaper/ easier to get a taller 4th gear for the tranny

A smaller wheel would get the car off from a dead stop quicker but being smaller it would have to turn more to go the same distance causeing the rpm's to go up even more.

3000 rpms seams about right but at 60mph on the interstates or turnpike around here it feels like your going to get run over. I did realign the exhaust a little so it's not grounding out on the chassis anywhere and it was a much more pleasant ride. I keep forgetting my speedo is off about 5mph also but it was still turning 4200rpms @ about 80mph.

I know a saw a rpm/speed chart somewhere and the maunal trans (I think) was like 20mph faster at 4000rpms, or something like that. Again I'm not looking for speed, but 4000rpms for 1 hour down the turnpike sounds punishing to me on the engine.

Is that legal?

The US version of the AT get the highest ratio, 3.55 IIRC to compensate for the US engines being the most gutless. You could replace the tranny or specifically the final drive (but the pinion shaft is part of the AT and not interchangeable with the manuals) with one from the ROW or some model 944s that have the 3.08 final drive.

You also could fit larger diameter OD wheels/ tyres, up to say +10% max. use a trye calculator, IIRC stock is 24.7"? Would have to adversely effect the suspension to some degree though and should be compensated for.

It's only illegal if you get caught.

I'm all ready running 245/40R18's in the rear (25.71")
and 215/45R18 on the front (25.61") I don't think I can fit anything bigger than that.
