I am in the habit of making my own fiberglass parts so I may make my own, but a complete one peice front end from GT racing can be had for a little under 1200. If you buy the carrera GT figberglass fenders, front nose and hood it will put you right over 1500. That is really not bad if you are into custom car builds. I think you would have to lay it pretty thick to get a fiberglass part heavier than its steel counterpart. A stock 924 hood weighs 79 pounds while the GT racing hood weighs in at 14.
I was just thinking, between full and empty my 951s fuel tank can differ by about 170 pounds in the rear. _________________ 87 924s

Is the GT hood fiberglass or carbon fiber? In any event, 1200 - 1500 is not bad, the manufacturers are probably not enjoying the economy of scale by building these.
In terms of bang for the buck, ditching a 40-60 lbs lead acid battery for a couple of shorai LFX FeLiPo4 motorcycle batteries is hard to beat. In warm climate you can probably get away with one 21 amp-hr battery. It will set you back something to the tune of $200, which is comparable to a quality lead-acid battery. You probably don't want to drive a v8 powered 924/944 in lousy weather anyway, traction would be problematic to say the least. Getting rid of lead-acid battery will allow you to get rid of 35-55 lbs of weight, depending on how heavy the darn thing was. The best part is: in terms of cost of ownership the lithium-polymer batteries are about the same as lead acid batteries. They are 1/5 the weight double the price for equivalent amp-hours and last 2 to 3 times longer than lead-acid batteries. |
