hey guys I had a 4 speed in the car and it started making loud grinding sounds so seeing as i had a 5 sped sitting around (both non snailshell) I am trying to install that. I got the old one out and put the 5 speed in but it is sitting about 1/2 inch all the way around, do I need to take it out and cut off a 1/2 inch off of one of the shafts or does it just needs to be wiggled abit I had to quite as it was 9:00pm and was getting too dark anyone done this before and have any suggestions

I don't think you should need to cut the shaft; I think it's probably just hung up somewhere. Did you inspect the coupling closely, make sure that's not it?
You have got the 5-speed shift rod in, right? 4-speed shift rod is too long, won't work - your shifter will end up in the radio! LOL
Get a good night's sleep and try again in the day, I'd think you should be fine.

when you say the 4 speed shifter do you mean off the tranny or the shift linkage out of the torque tube, and by 1/2 inch i mean that around where the tranny and bell housing meet

I just did this conversion. I took the 4 speed from my 78 and replaced it with a 5 speed from an 82. First, the 78's torque tube has no recesses for dowel pin locators. Take them out of the 5 speed tranny if they are stuck in it and discard. Second, the input shaft of the tranny and the driveshaft are VERY close when it's bolted up, like touching each other. If the tranny won't bolt up with the dowel pins removed, your driveshaft is not pressed into the torque tube enough. I have the dimensions in the garage if you need them. Third, the shift rod from the shifter to the linkage must be changed, as Vaughan said, they are different lengths. There are 2 parts on the linkage of the tranny that must be changed also. I've circled them in the attached schematic. I also had to change the reverse switch between them. You can cut off the connector and install it but why hack the wiring up.

Also, don't forget to make spacers to fit between the tranny mounts and the body so the transmission doesn't hit the fuel tank. Plus, the rubber bellows(boot) that fits over the shift linkage at the tranny end is a different length for each one. Might be an idea to get the right one on there before you bolt the linkage together. |

Hey deisel that is fine but what you did is you took a 82 snailshell and put it in I have an 80 non snailshell so it fits right in and bolts right up it is just the shifter linkage that is the problem

Nope, it was all Audi-based. No snailshell action at all.

hey guys make up your mind I am showing it the 924 tech section that it isn't a big job and that all I have to do is change the shift link at the tranny side I dont see why spacers are needed it doesn't hit the gas tank when hoisted right up it clears with no issues all around ??? you guys must have some good weed down there LOL or sniffen gas again.

hey guys found out why my tranny wount go in but cant figure out how to fix it. the spline or tube in the torque tube is sticking out almost 1" but that is about 1/2 inch too long any one got any suggestions as to how this could have happened. or how to fix it. I also figured out how to fix the problem of putting spacers on the mounts. take the tranny mounts off the 4 speed and put them on the 5 speed problem solved. but does anyone have a suggestion to get that shaft in or what this problem is cause even the 4 speed wont go in.
