Does anyone know a good alternative to the internal fuel pump in the 931? or maybe a place where I can buy it cheap?
It is a 931 euro from 79(the pump is the long kind of pump which is installed from the side of the tank(horizontal)) I know there is 2 different pumps for the 924 N/A do not know if it is the same with the 931.
Thanks! |

Mine is also dead. It would be nice to see if there is a cheaper alternative available, but most tell me that the car runs fine without it. Some here have taken it apart completely as well. _________________ 924, 82, 5 speed, dark red, 500 dollar special.

The recommended Bosch 928 608 013 00 in-tank pump would not fit in my '79 924 for more on why, see the post on this board: 924 In-Tank Fuel Pump. Unlike Mars478's report ...

... my '79 NA did not. So I would think if the turbo runs without the in-tank pump, one would have to go to a more powerful pump perhaps even as powerful as the 044 (more below).
Other after-market in-tank pump alternatives for '79 924 NA and turbos were manufactured by Airtech and Pierburg -- less expensive than the Bosch in-tank but both now NA so very difficult to locate -- occasionally I'll see one on ebay. Many persons use the 928 201 081 04 strainer (not a 928 201 081 03 which I think is no longer available) which fits perfectly in the tank of my '79 (and is also used in the 1978-88 928s); however, with it, my 924 NA runs flat at higher RPMs with poor acceleration.
A few people have resorted to a more powerful in-line fuel pump like the Bosch 044 Universal Fuel Pump. For how to rebuild the in-tank pump and/or instal the in-line Bosch 044 see the similar install at My Porsche 928 GTS - Tech Tips.
Fortunately I was able to rebuild mine with new hose and re-wiring. The order of assembly looks mostly like this:

If you are interested in alternative higher pressure external fuel-pumps, a good comparison of flow, voltage, and fuel pressure of pumps are graphed and tabled in this thread: Fuel Pump Comparison - Bosch 044 vs. Walbro 416lph vs. Walbro 255lph vs. Supra Denso. I doubt that the higher pressure outputs would be necessary or even desirable for your '79 931. |
