The synchronizer hub assembly was the tightest fit I encountered.

This the culprit that made third gear grind.

This is the LSD unit. The torque on the clutch pack checked out well within specs so I am leaving it alone.

Pelican came through with flying colors.

Gear cluster assembled with new synchro ring.

This is the tallest 5th gear-set that the 944 carried. This would give around 170 mph at the lt1s redline. Taller ratios exist in another car with a similar sourced gearbox but I don't recall the make. I know it was a diesel. maybe Audi.

Gearbox ready.

Despite some part compatibility issues I am still making progress. The synchro I got ended up not being correct because of lock issues, and the diff carrier bearing was the wrong side. However with some cross-referencing I came up with a Timkin equivalent from autozone which was true to spec even in the most important clearance of thrust. Since it was right on I kept the two .020" shims that sat behind the race.

The cone bearing sits so close to the face of the LSD unit, use of a puller is not really feasible. Luckily the engineers made punch access holes.

The RH diff carrier bearing was the only bearing in the whole transmission that showed signs of problems.

New bearing

I am still looking for the correct synchro for 3-4 since Laso had to go and change the original design but use the same part number. Now the transmission is sitting in parts-bags on the bench waiting and that drives me nuts. I have found sources outside of the US, but i am still holding out for something local. There is a place in NC called Cogs Cogs (anyone ever used them?) that specializes in porsche transmissions, but I have not had luck getting a salesman on the phone yet.

Try calling Roger at California Motorsports. He seems very knowledgeable on all Porsche transaxles. Maybe he has the correct parts.

For what its worth there is now a source for the correct synchros. Pelican has revised what they had available and they now carry the correct part. The part number is 016-311-295-M260. If you plan on replacing synchros in these transmissions be careful as not all of them will work.

this one didn't work.

this one did.

They both come up for the same application. Two years ago the good one wasn't available. At least I could not find it.

Details on why the Laso didnt work

So after nearly a three year wait on parts, with my transmission in pieces in a box, i was able to remember how it went back together in about two afternoons. With new seals, bearings and synchros it did not disappoint, clicking through the gears quietly and easily. The LSD is a little quick to chatter turning corners so I will give it more additive. The taller top gear really fits the engine better.

Thank you Pelican!

My only other quest related to this transmission is the find the ultra tall Audi 5th gear that the 944 never had. Supposedly it is out there but I don't have any serious leads on finding one because I don't know where to look yet.
