Finally! I have a fully finished engine. The final spec includes
Omega Forged 87mm pistons
ARP conrod bolts and nuts
Lightened flywheel circa 30%
Fully balanced
ARP head studs
Stock head gasket
Enlarged head chambers and now running 8.2:1 CR
Enlarged/ported/smoothed intakes to head
New guides, seals, relapped valves
Piper Cam & vernier pulley and all timed up
Custom copper washers to ensure the spark plugs are not protruding into the head chamber to avoid hot spots/detonation
Break in oil for initial running in on the rollers for its first 2-3 hours. Then switch to its regular engine oil diet
And all for the price of a concours UK 924 turbo!! This doesn't include the cost of turbo rebuild, Zircotec exhaust coatings, engine bay repaint and other refurbishment work at the front end!
Had a long discussion regarding squish and quench of which I couldn't regurgitate the theory here. However I am satisfied that the material lost within the head chambers has been done with care and attention and shouldn't cause any issues. This is bourn by the fact that they even considered the copper washers needed to pull the spark plugs out of the chamber to avoid hot spots and therefore detonation.
It'll get fitted next week and I plan to be driving within 2 weeks barring any further delays of issues. Big annoyance is I can't get started on it until Sunday.
Crappy phone pic. Not its usual orientation!!

Progress ............
New WUR location.
Manifold and turbo all lock wired. Bung fitted to enable EGT temp sensor. Nipple needs welding up and trimming back
All ship shape underneath
MoT should be OK with all new fittings
Improved fan in lieu of radiator. I want a new ally 944 turbo one in due course
Exhaust centre box delete and Zircotec'd front pipe
Will be back on it on Monday to fit intake manifold and fully plumb and wire up. Needs new fuel pipes to be made Tuesday. Looks like the key will be turned mid/late next week. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

I cant say enough about how great your car looks!
On the topic of spark plugs and the copper washers, since you are going to this level of detail re: detonation, etc., have you indexed the plugs?
That is the use of thin shim washers to make sure the electrode of the plug is "aimed" correctly relative to the intake valves when the plug is torqued down. This can serve to produce a more uniform and efficient flame front during combustion, I am told. I recall this from back in my drag racing days with small and big block Chevy engines.
Minor detail and I dont have anything to prove effectiveness, but I figured Id mention it.

More progress .......
New fuel filter which is rebuildable
Dansk SS back box looks very nice on. (must run a hose over the dust under the bumper!)
And finally ..........
its all done, in, tightened, buttoned up and ready to turn the key
Still need to buy black silicone as the blue stuff just won't do. Also need some more Mikalor hose clamps in the right size. Will also get a custom length throttle cable made in due course. Despite trying to keep all the hoses and cabling tidy it still looks like a birds nest!! Needs work I think. The K&N filter will be swapped out for pipework in to the cool air where the washer bottle used to sit.
Another perspective
It will run a rebuilt Carrera GT spec K26 2660GA 6.10 turbo at circa 1.0 bar. AFR gauge, VDO boost gauge and a Phormula KS-4 knock sensor for some security. Will modify the WUR to be dual adjustable to set control pressures more easily. No idea what this spec and modifications will deliver in performance but can't wait to find out _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Very very nice, congratulations! You might want to install a bolt thru the fender to support the 944 coolant bottle (on the bottom). Mine was a bit loose without it. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Congratulations on getting there, the car looks great!
On one of the earlier photos it looks like you've relocated your fuel filter from the engine bay, correct? What was the reason behind that? _________________ 1981 932 with mods:

To remove all unecessary pipework in the engine bay and make the pipe work more direct to the fuel dizzy rather than detour to the filter. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Looks beautiful!
Is it correct that the spark plug (and the sparkplugwires) in a 931 are on the other side then in a 924 NA?
I see that on your picture, but I didn't mentioned it ever before. _________________ 911SC - 1980 |

Simply spectacular results.
You are going to LOVE driving that thing at 1 bar. Are you getting there with wastegate spring or boost controller? Also would be interested in more details on the EGT setup (what sensor are you using, and what are you doing with its output), as well as the knock sensor (where did you locate it, what are you doing with its ouput).
Sure wish I could have seen it in person when I was across the pond a couple weeks ago! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
