i heard that a transaxle from a 968 would bolt right on to a 944 or 924s. is this true or at least possible to do with out much modification. i sure would love a six-speed!

Yeah, it bolts right up. It's pretty much the same tranny, with an extra gear. The 968 torque tube is a much better design too.

will it bolt up to an 80 924NA of about 180 hp? would like to put the 6 spd in here and the 5 spd in my 77 and 1/2 car.

would like to build in a 3rd gear near 1 to1 and put a slight overdrive in fourth and full overdrive in fifth. and install an LSD. or is this an unrealistic and impractical idea. Maybe I should have a stock rebuild of my 5 speed. It works great but after 130 grand on the clock I feel it is suspect and is a PITA to r and r.

will i need to install a 951 poly gas tank for clearance?

I already istalled the aluminum rear backing plates and bearing retainer/ caliper mount assemblies from the 944 series on to my 5 lug m471 optioned car.

I already have the poly tank and straps ect.

any info greatly appreciated.

Ask Applebit on this one. He put a 944 tranny into his car.

I think the key difference is whether or not you had an Audi tranny or a Porsche tranny. I don't know about the clearance though.

Check this on a 944 forum, like on rennlist.com. I know it can be done on 924S's, but I'm not sure about regular 924s. It's the same box, lengthened for an extra gear. At least that is what I have been told.

seems like an awful lot of money to spend on a 924, to much hassle, really no value.

so what?

what's value got to do with it ?

I like my 924. It's my toy and I like to play with it unlike other guys who like to play with....

I work on my 924 as a work of art and any modifications or updates I simply look upon as the extension of the natural evolution of the car.

Well your "work of art" is gonna cost you in excess of $3000 dollars. An extra gear would be nice, but it isn't worth $3000.

Just another "pie in the sky" 924 upgrade topic. I'll chalk this up in the same category with all the engine swaps for $500, and Franco cam gears that add "tons of power" to stock engines.

As far as your modifications and updates go, the natural evolution of the 924 is called the 968.

Give me a break.

The way I see it, you could buy a good condition 951 for $10K, or get a decent 924 for $1000, and put $9000 in modifications into it. The 924 will be suited to your driving style, personality etc...

Whereas there are a ton of 951s out there, and they are often lacking in individuality.

The tranny code for the 968 is G50 I think. It is pretty similar 5 speed. I'm sure there have to be a few people who have put one into a 944.

The 968 transmission is a G44 not a G50; and, it is a 6 speed.

I think that I have to agree with Jon on this one. There is more than just drivetrain and suspension differences between a 968, a 951 and a 924. There are evolutionary differences that have been implemented over the time of production. It is not feasable to make a 951 - 968 out of a 924. You should start with a 951 or a 968 and modify it.

Thank you, I was eavesdropping on a 968 discussion and they kept mentioning their G50 stuff, so I assumed it was the G50.

Individuality CBASS? since when is a mass produced car individualized? Wait you would spend $9000 on a $1000 car? Where is the logic? When you drive a 951 it is a MUCH nicer car. It looks nice it IS nicer and a hell of a lot faster. a modified N/A 924 will NEVER be as fast as a really nice 951. Spend all the money you want on your 924 it is still a $1000 car. And last time I drove a n/a 924 a sixth gear was the last thing on my mind because it took so long to get through the five. Again be happy with the 924 for what it is. It will never be a 968 6 speed or not. DREAMERS, all of you!

Living in Reality -Ryan
81 931 way faster than your nonexistent 924 n/a with a $3000 dollar 6 speed and a lame useless Franco cam gear. (sorry to bash the work of art) not to mention a whole hell of alot cheaper.

Oops, meant "it is pretty similar to the 5 speed"

I would rather had a $1,000 car I had "wasted" $9,000 on, in the way of new parts and upgrades, than a $10,000 car full of worn used parts. I would be able to set up the car any way I'd like, and it would run circles around a 951, as far as handling and braking are concerned.

It's not necessarily about how fast you go, if it was, I don't think anyone here WOULD own a 924. Let's face it, the 924 is not a fast car. There are many ways to make a 924 faster, but none of them are cheap.

You could build a 10 second drag car for $2000, but would you want to drive it on the street? I know I don't. I would be quite content with a NA putting out 170hp. If I want something faster, I'll go for the RX-7 with a 400ci Ford smallblock.
