OK on my 944 the noise comes from the rear passenger wheel when I hit a bump. It's kind of a KACHUNK sound, like it's something heavy. I've had the wheel bearings changed (all 4 wheels) brakes and rotors done and all 4 shocks replaced. What else could it be!?!? it's driving me nuts and killing my paychecks.
TIA

Anything loose in your trunk? How's the hatch look?
Check your suspension bushings and your muffler hangers.
Then have the shock mounting holes checked that they haven't worn sufficiently to cause them to move around. _________________ Stefan

The hatch is tight and I took everything out of the compartments on the sides and the spare tire compartment. You might be on to something with the shock mounting holes tho. I'll have a look at that when it dries up around here. Thanks for the suggestions. _________________ 87' 924S non-sunroof (Red) 45K miles

You're using the wrong vehicle - borrow a Hummer and then try running over your spouse/girlfriend.

May sound silly but I heard the same exact sound the first few days I had my 924. I could not for the life of me figure out where it was coming from. It sounded like every time I hit a bump my back shock was gonna come through the back of the car.
My husband and I drove it around the neighborhood trying to pin point where it was coming from. The culprit.........my moonroof locks were shot, every time I hit a bump the moonroof raised and slammed back down, not enough to let in light or air. We could have swore it was coming from the back area of the car, turned out to be right above us lol.
Just a suggestion, try popping out your moonroof, if you have one, while it's sitting, if it's not locked in properly it makes a pretty bad sound.
Also on my 924 I have those "secret stash" areas in the back, near the wheel wells, on the inside, the carpet lifts up, make sure there are no tools not secure back there. I found 20 years worth of random junk in both sides of mine that were rattling around. _________________ 1988 "Please Pull Me Over" Red 924

Eska: Thanks for the suggestions. I'm pretty sure I've had the roof out and still heard the sound, but I'll pay more attention to it now Yes, I've taken everything out of the "secret compartments" along with the spare tire.
I think I may have found what the culprit "might" be. I got under my car today and grabbed my axle and I gave it a good shake (does that sound dirty?) and heard a very similar noise. Could the boots be empty? (no grease) How hard is it to grease them? Or would it just be my axles are bad?

If it were the CV axles, you should 'hear' them when taking off, turning around corners at speed, etc. No grease in boots, just dust covers. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Mark each drive axle R&L--in&out.
Remove the CV bolts. Check out ideola's new bolts http://garage.ideola.com/
Put on thick rubber gloves and take apart the rubber boot from the CV. Be careful you do not drop the steel bearings. Remove as much old grease and junk as possible.
Repack CV joint with CV grease---this is not cheapo grease. Pelican sells a tube that fills 4 CVs
Put the axels on the same way you took them off. In the future when you hear a clicking on the drive axels, flip them R to Left side (manual only). This puts the pressure on a differnt part of the CV bearing.
Very dirty job--but necessary.

if its not the CV axles.. check your exhaust... i ran into a problem with mine doing it too when i drove mine. The exhaust was a little loose and hit the underside.
Also i would look your bushings too. If they are looking rough and/or missing you might have an issue there too Just my 2 cents
Chances are the CV sounds like the culprit though. I have to replace my boots and grease when i get home next year. |

How about some of these to go with the newly repacked CVs:
