Back in January a friend of mine, Scottie, who drives crash truck at Castrol Raceway near(ish) here called to inform me that the class rules had changed and the concept of 'claimer car' had been altered.

The conversation sounded a lot like:

"Sime, you've got lots of cars leaking bodily fluids on your lawn, right?"

"Who told you that?"

"I helped haul the last one out there, remember? Anyway, the claimer-car rules have changed and -"

"Scottie, I'm in! I'll supply a leaking wreck if you bend up the cage and come up with a spec seat. I'll even stand around in the pits with shiny tools in my hands, looking important."

"I'll be out the last weekend of March, wife permitting, and we'll prep that sucker then. How 'bout we call ourselves 4D Racing - 3 Dudes and a Dame." Mandy and I recalled this as 4-B Racing - 3 Bozos and a Bimbo, but this was too lower class even for us.

Well...that's what I remember... So three days and some cheeseburgers & colorful language later we've got our entry. The 78 that I was going to turn into a roadster has been reassigned to dirt track duty. I spent a few nights getting it running and then the hordes descended. In three days we stripped it to a shell, completely rebuilt the front end (including changing the struts and repacking the upper mounts), upgraded the front sway bar, changed the front calipers, swapped out one really bent rear control arm, changed a fender, found a crap seat so we could joyride in it, bled brakes for hours and then loaded it on a trailer for a trip to Scottie's garage for some welding. Pics below.

Scottie (L) and Roger (R) - this morning's fender crew.

Roger: "I don't know what this is but it's coming off."

Mandy, Scottie, Roger and me. Pic taken by resident 8-year-old.

Scottie took some time to teach Mandy how to weld. Yes, the fuel tank was leaking... But that's not what she was welding...

First welding project. Everyone survived.

Rollout. Pink hood courtesy of Mand. Outvoted by 3 Dudes. Little did we know at this time...

That the car would be right back in the shop with a REALLY destroyed CV.

Which would require instant attention. Maybe this picture would be funnier if we had both been naked...

Success! And a highly illegal joyride. It took us about 15 minutes to wipe the grins off our faces.

Loaded on trailer and off to next stage. Late Sunday night.

All with a car I ended up getting for free after some horse-trading for other 924 parts. A GREAT weekend.

Nobbbi, is it my imagination or are you becoming more...how do I say this, ENGLISH. Yes I've noticed that you are using more German words lately but not just that. There's a certain English (I don't care any more...), a certain cynical tone these days? Not a critisism....almost a sense of humour about you latley? Have you meet an English girl by any chance?

Peeps, thanks for the great feedback. To me, this seems to be in the spirit of home mechanicking - one thing I really appreciate about this board.

Test and tune (how much tuning can you do on a car like this?) is first weekend of May. We've still got about a month to weld in the cage and paint the car. In the meantime, here are some more snaps form the weekend.

Not even the right air tools could prevent the windshield breaking when it came out. I had to wear the geekiest safety glasses on my test drive!

Once you get all the mod cons out there's not much to the car, really. Gives me hope for my roadster build.

"I just did WHAT?" An un-Canadian moment? This was taken after I'd discovered that I'd just wasted 2 hours rebuilding a rear 944 caliper instead of a 924 FRONT caliper! I've got boxes of the silly things, and after a while they all start to look the same.

Looks innocuous enough, but this rear control arm was as crooked as a Manhattan lawyer. PO had piled the car into a curb (kerb, for 9XXXgirl).

Anyone believe in signs from above?

Happy pilot!

Stay tuned as 4D Racing gets even more sideways!
