(Apropos of today's POTD): Just acquired my 14th Porsche this morning. This is a 1980 924 Turbo "S". Tan leather seats with cloth inserts. M471 suspension package. And G31+LSD
Body is relatively straight, has a few minor dings here and there, but the paint is horrible, completely gone in some places. The car spent part of its life in MS, so paint damage is probably due to UV exposure. No cancer any where on the body itself, but the battery tray is completely shot. As a consequence, there is a living swamp in the passenger footwell. All glass is good.
The motor starts right up, but there is a CIS problem that will not allow it to stay idling. It will fire right up, run for about 2-3 seconds, then shut down. Has new pumps & new filter, so I believe the problem is in the fuel distributor / AFM assembly, or possibly the WUR. Will have to diagnose. But when revving, you can hear the turbo spooling up nicely. Does not appear to leak or burn much oil, but hard to tell this early on.
Too early to tell what the fate of this one will be. The LSD is going to be removed and put into the Euro 931 from PA. Don't know yet if I'm going to part this one out or try to restore it as a running example for quick resale...certainly would be easy to swap in another trans, but I don't need any more projects, acquired it only for the LSD. This example is right on the razor's edge of being worthwhile to restore or not. We'll have to see.

It's you choice but I don't think it's good to kill a toofah for an LSD. This car is good enough to be restored and driven. Just my $0.02 _________________ WBR, Shurick

I agree. BUT, it doesn't make financial sense to do anything else. I could swap another trans into it, no problem, but it's barely functional in its current state (all the hyrdaulics are shot, in addition to the CIS problem) and would require a minimum of $2K to make it presentable. I have too many other projects demanding my time, attention, and limited budget, so unless I find a sympathetic soul who wants to make an attempt, the prospects are not optimistic for this poor gal.
I would have bought just the trans if I could have talked the guy into it, but he didn't want to deal with parting it out, and putting a new trans in does him no good since he didn't have the wherewithal to get it running in the first place. It's another moral dilemma for sure. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

The easiest way is to swap a transmission and let it go. I may be wrong but I think it can find it's owner. It can take a day or two of your life to sort some issues to sell it faster. But take a moment and think... Maybe this toofah will stand near your car at an annual porsche owners reunion. I think you'll see him smiling to you.
P.S. Sorry, my English isn't good enough to convey my thoughts sometimes. But I hope you'll get me right. _________________ WBR, Shurick

Dan, If you decide to part it, let's talk about the wheels. Might be able to take them off your hands. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

I pondered buying this car a couple of weeks ago.....I did like the colour......but the fact it was a Series 1 plus the distance it was from me.....caused me to not go for it. _________________ 1981 931 (Canadian car)

Anyone who feels compelled to save this puppy (or kitten, as the case may be) is welcome to come over to my house, swap in the 924S trans & torque tube, and haul the car away. Only $1000. Any takers? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
