I was looking through my haynes manual collection and found the ford escort turbo car used 2 electric cooling fans mounted behind the header panel in front of the radiators instead of behind.they used simple shrouds held in pace by 4 bars extendind diagonally to sped nuts mounted over holes drilled into the radiator support.

this would give more foward clearance for an audi 5 cylinder.

Also use the 924s / 944 coolant expansion tank as it mounts over top the stock 924 ignition module and not between the engine accesories and the radiator as in the 924 2 litre na.

The forward clearence is not the issue with the 5 cylinder swap, it's the sides and top. It is fairly tight on the top, and the head side can be a bitch on the 10 valve models.

However, if you used both the stock fan setup and the ford one, you would get a lot better cooling at idle.
