They're alumin[i]um and pry up-out at about a 45 degree angle. Glad I removed mine during the repaint because there was a pile of sand accumulated behind from sandblasting some nearby areas. -But I never had the thought to delete them - they went right back on as soon as they, and the rest of the car was painted. Once removed, you're left with a seam sticking out..
I'd foresee possible problems with differing rates of thermal expansion between the aluminum trim and the steel roof, leading to cracked filler and paint. -Or would you be removing the trim piece and filling the whole recess with body filler?? Either way, I'd leave it alone - it looks fine as it is. + to make body filler stick, you'd need to grind down to bare steel and say goodbye to any zinc protection that might be there now.

On the 941, I'm installing the late-style rain gutters, which you can get used from a 924S. They probably come on the 1987-onward 944 as well, but I don't know that for certain. They don't have the ugly concave shape of the early ones, and look MUCH nicer. I don't have pix here at work, but will take some when I get home tonight.
The only challenge is that they require 6 clips per side. I don't know yet how the clips affix to the car (i.e. do they just snap on or do they require riveting) because I'm still waiting to get my set. FWIW, I can get the set of 12 clips for $16 if you decide to go this route. I've never been able to get the rain channels with the clips, so I'm sort of assuming they're permanently affixed to the car.
If you source a used set, make sure they come with the tiny little rubber gasket (runs the length of the channel), otherwise, you'll have to buy that new too. _________________ ideola's garage

Yeah, Porsche did modify them on the GTS…
I never noticed it until you asked. Thanks

Picked some pics of Dan's stash…
Thats the Carrera GT(P) LeMans raingutter delete
Smoooth!
Rain gutter delete looks good up here isn't it! Sharp like a blade.
Hmmm… not sharp enough.
But, here is a ‘BOSS’ without the delete?:
And is this here a gutter delete on a D?:
At least if it isn't the car on this poster down here…
The SCCA poster clearly shows a rain gutter there.
Odd I say…

This ties in with the streamlined look I'm trying to give my 79. I think I'll try to pull this one off. I guess I can use fiberglass, considering I'm going to be fiberglassing the whole roof as it stands. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

I think it's one more thing to make things look smoother - BUT you see just above the rear quarter glass window they filled in that area? I would not because take a look by "standing back" and notice how it actually takes away from the lines.
I think the way to do it is fill in where the strip went. Nothing else. _________________ Minneapolis British Sports Car Restoration | v6 + v8 Engine Conversion Swaps - BMC British Automobile

Jon, I agree with your comment about the line above the quarter window, and I like your photoshop rendition.
Why do you suppose the rain channel was there in the first place? I've noticed that Porsche added a bunch of supplemental seals to the 1987-onward cars that weren't on the early cars. There are two each on the doors, and one underneath the rear spoiler. I'm wondering if these were required to prevent water ingress when they changed the concave rain gutter to the smooth one on the 924S? Food for thought.
The parts are cheap and easy to add, as I've just ordered and installed them on the 941. Here are the part numbers (check PET for placement) and prices I can get them for:
add'l door gasket, long horizontal: 477.837.233, $16 each, 2 required
add'l door gasket, short veritical: 477.837.235, $4.25 each, 2 required
add'l hatch gasket: 944.512.463.00, $75, 1 required
OK, so the add'l hatch gasket isn't exactly cheap, but I've noticed it makes a significant difference keeping fumes out of the passenger compartment. HUGE. _________________ ideola's garage

I tried to convert mine to the late style before my repaint... unfortunately, it will take some modification. The early style just snaps into place, but the late style has clips that clip onto rivets which the 924's do not have. You would have to fabricate something for the clips to hold on to. The clips slide so position isn't all that important. _________________ 1980 924 NA
