Haven't really looked into it, was just wondering if the thought had occurred to anyone else. It's a pretty low profile engine and the 2.5l variant would provide plenty of HP potential. I know it would still take a lot of work and modification, but It might be a lot easier than most v6/v8 transplants and still provide more HP potential than many of the other transplant options.
Subaru's are thick in my neck of the woods, so I could probably find a 1.8l easily, a 2.5l would take a little more time though.
Any thoughts? |

low-profile but really wide.
Take a tape-measure and measure the width of a scooby motor and then measure the width of a 924 engine-bay. You never know your luck but I doubt it.
Post your findings. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

| the V8 conversion is very easy, I don't know why a subaru engine would be any easier. |

| if you gonna do that go the full hog and employ the transmission , lose the torque tube , instead have a p/shaft and rear diff , then you have a porsche 924 all wheel drive , with some respectable performance. would be very advisable to have some decent braking on it too. i mentioned it earlier on a different thread , 'cause thats what i eventually want to do with mine if i keep her. problem with the standard 924 it is not a performance car by todays standards , so unless you're into the classic original stuff , which is fine but i'm not , an upgrade is essential. My first option would be to upgrade the crank , lightweight 'rods and pistons , convert to EFI , but from what i read , will not really have much more performance anyway. and where i live , cost would be at least triple than changing the engine. |

A Subaru is my daily driver. I can take some measurements off the flat 4 if you want. However, it parks in the same garage as my 924 and 951, and trust me I've eyeballed it a few times. I am very certain the Subie flat 4 is much too wide to fit. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Please excuse the awful steel wheels and hub caps, that will be the winter tire setup. I have a set of flat black Motegi Traklite 1.0 rims for summer.

don't know about the width... friend of mine fitted a subaru 2.0 engine from a legacy in a vw bug... and those don't have that much space... but it fits...
is a 2.5 that much wider? _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

On the hood of those Imprezas, there's a big scoop. Is that where they put Kleenix? _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

Only on the turbocharged models. It cools the top mounted intercooler. Functional, unlike most of the bits on many new cars. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

If a Turbo 911 Air Cooled fits in a 924 / 944 a Subaru has GOT to fit .. perhaps

You can mod the Subaru transmission to 2wd with a little bit of welding - they do this to get the cars onto dynos then change out later.
Drifters are drifting Subaru's now with this mod - but longevity of trans takes a hit regardless of usage as that extra load which went to the front diff now stacks up in 2wd config.
They're working on solving this - read this :

Roughly 30x36x20
That's my 02 Impreza 2.5 litre engine which I think is still (generally) the same (dimensions) as the latest production boxer.
Mind you this is rough. The 30 width is tight. Some power cable might need to be rerouted, this measurement was the engine mass. Add four more inches if you want to plug and play. The 36 inches is from the firewall to the front upper radiator hose while the 20 inches is measured (roughly) from the front bottom of the engine to (roughly) the top of the oil cap's height.
If you would like more accurate dimensions, give me a reference point to measure from - like maybe the engine dimensions, inner fender to inner fender, or firewall to radiator, or hood down crawl underneath and push the tape measure to the hood and measure to the oil pan or cross member . . . _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)
