Hi All,
Just thought i would post an update on my race car project,
Finally got the 968 engine mounted, working on the gearbox at the moment,
Have had the guards and splitter turn up from the USA ( I am in New Zealand).
The guards are just sitting there so they are not quite straight.
Cheers

Great effort there, good to see someone doing it.
Hard part is done. Did you mod the 24 cross member or fit a 44 one and change the mounting? Either would require welding new engine mount brackets to the chassis. Be good to see some close up pics of the X member, steering shaft set up, mounts, etc.
Best of luck completing this project. Keep the Pics coming please. |

I have used the 968 cross member, this has been welded in. I did this by cutting a "C" section out of a donar front cut i have (944S) and doing the smae on the 924. This was then simply welded in.
The gearbox is going to be a little harder as i need to create a mount for the aluminium cross member from the 968. Has anyone else done this? any suggestions or ideas?
I have cut out the back tray area to create room for a fuel cell and to reduce weight. _________________ Cheers Rob

| There are a few here that have removed the 924 welded in beam that the box hangs from (bassgt & rasta) , to reveal the same bolt holes for the use of the gearbox mounting beam as found in the later 944's. I know the 968 has a different shaped beam but I was under the impression that it's mounting points were identical to the late 944's? |

pretty sure the bolt holes are only there on the 924S. I removed my welded crossmemebr from my 924 and then welded in a crossmember from a late 944 when I did my plastic tank conversion. Not too difficult... pretty straight forward. _________________ 1980 924 NA

When, I fitted a plastic tank to my 77 car there were no mounting holes in the chassis legs when I removed the welded in crossmember, so I welded in some thick plate with a M12 nut welded into it in order to bolt a late 944 crossmember in place. I don't know if the 968 and post 1986 944 crossmembers are the same but I know that a 968 gearbox will mount on a post '86 944 crossmember.
Good luck, a really great looking project there.
