Last time I drove my 1981 931, coming off the highway I heard some exhaust and rattling. I knew I probably had a cracked bracket that attaches the waste gate to the torque tube mount, but now looks like the J-Pipe split due to the stress as well, a common failure cascade. Not a problem. I have a spare J-Pipe and bracket. I'll pull the old ones off and re-weld them as spares. While under there doing all this, I have to pull the waste gate. Although it seems to be operating OK, I think I am going to put in a spare I have around. I'll rebuild the old one as a standby spare. Looks like the studs could go for a refresh, etc.

The spare one I now have around part #: 930 123 214 1R. I have seen this number floating around. On the top of the aluminum hat is stamped '14.555.; I have not heard of folks discussing a number on top - anyone know what this references?

I have adjustable boost (pressure into the top of the hat to offset opening pressure.

In taking my current spare apart, I found a poor condition diaphragm, just barely split where it folds. I have a white spare diaphragm that I am using as a replacement. (I seem to have a lot of spares - comes from the mindset one develops from hanging around here a lot ! I also have new spare springs that I obtained with the diaphragm.

The spring inside my spare waste gate is 5.5 inches tall. The extra springs I have are 6.875 inches tall and 7.25 inches tall.

When I obtained the spare diaphragm and springs, the seller indicated one spring was 1 bar, the other 'factory' for a 1989 911 Turbo. I'd like to know if the taller spring is likely the 1 bar, the 6.875 inch spring is the 'factory' for the 1989 911 Turbo and what boost it may be.

And also, if the 5.5 inch spring is likely a stock 931 spring (U.S.) I probably want to use the factory 931 spring, since I have adjustable boost and this would be my floor. My spare waste gate is likely from a 931, just wanted to vet the 5.5 inch spring to be sure.

Any help sorting this out is appreciated.

Thanks Dave. So it appears highly likely my spare waste gate was from a 931. Going with my 5.5 inch spring.
