Does it worth it to put fiberglass body part to lighten a street car? (Fenders, front spoiler and hood)
I’m mainly using the car as a summer/weekend car, in other word, it is not a daily drive but a fun car/boy toy.
This question is mostly address to those who put fiberglass body part on there car.
Basically, I want to know if you have a significant gain in acceleration/performance.
I don’t want to send 1K on fiberglass and no getting more fun out of the ride.

You might save a total of 100 pounds, and that's just an optimistic wild guess, not scientific. Rule of thumb is that 10 pounds is the equivalent of gaining 1 HP, so you be the judge.
But you must also weigh (pun intended) the downsides of fiberglass on a street driven car. Most aftermarket fiberglass parts are meant for race cars, and don't take into account stupid drivers in parking lots or your neighbors and friends who will want to come by and admire your new found speed and performance, and promptly lean on your flimsy fiberglass parts, cracking them. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

a fibreglass bonnet would be awesome....ide prefer the crush resistance of a steel one in a crash anyday over the fibreglass
front fender wise fibreglass ones are ALOT lighter then steel _________________ 1979 NA

I doubt you could tell with the Butt-g-meter buy changing to FG unless you also gut the interior and replace glass with lexan. but then it becomes a race car.
I wouldnt mind having a FG hood on a Street car but wouldn't do the fenders. _________________ "Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves. "

my 931 already had fg guards and bonnet*. i loved them tbh. most noticeable thing about the weigh reduction of the bonnet was the gas struts lifting the bonnet for you. The car always felt light and responsive.
*hood for you hoodlums _________________ '86 944 |

You could save about 40 lbs at the min if you replace the front and rear bumpers and shocks.
shocks about 2 1/2 lbs vs euro mounts 8 oz = 8 lbs
front and rear bumper weight savings total about 20 lbs
rubber bumpers about 2 1/2 lbs ea 10 lbs
Things you may want to change rear sound mat, fold down portion of rear seat[easily replaced back], rear rug, small spare, lighter rims, etc.
I have a front bumper with all the parts here in Fl. Sorry for the repeat posting. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Thanks guys for your input.
Ideola : Thanks for the rule of thumb, 1 HP/ 10 lbs.
Vince : Thanks for the info, but I’m already on original euro fiberglass bumper.
I see you guys all pointing me in the same direction, do the bonnet (hood) but be carfull about the fenders.
So, I will do the bonnet this fall or next spring and I’ll see how that goes before I take a decision on the fenders.
I will also look into replacing the pop-up light. I like the look but they are just to f@#%ing heavy,
any suggestion, other than the GT conversion? _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Not sure what else you would do other than the GT look... remove motor and bar, and weld em in the up position?? I'd suggest if you do anything do the GT conversion.
All that headlight gear does weigh quite a bit - mine is sitting in my garage since I did my GT conversion.

Deutsch-9 makes the best fixed headlight conversion on the market. It's not cheap, but the fit & finish is as good as factory by all accounts. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Yeah, when I win Lotto I'm going to swap mine over to those - much much better than the GT Racing rubbish. Either that or sell a kidney now... hmm... tempting...

Thanks Dan, those looks great but they are a bit too expensive.
Does anyone have any idea how they attach the lexan to the bucket,
I don’t see any screws or other attachment hardware. _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

There is a cutout template you can use to fabricate backdrops yourself. Also, there are eBay cheapos you can use.
The one's Dan is citing are pretty high quality kits. The dual projector is really the cats ass.
I've been wondering about modifying the template to suit a dual projector system. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |
