So this has been going on for quite some time now. I own a 79' 924 N/A. The problem is that when I shift into second gear, it will sometimes make a short grind, but still go into the gear. I've never had it grind in 3rd, 4th, or 5th, but 2 seems to hate me. Once in a blue moon, when I shift down into 1st it does this as well. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924- Snailshell

Can you tell from this picture if this is a snailshell? | If you have an 1979 924 with a 5 speed, you most likely have a Snailshell tranny. You either have bad synchros, or, bad bushings. After awhile (if the synchros go ignored) they will wear out the tranny to a point where it cannot be fixed. _________________ =====>Alex<=====

It is what it should be, and that is a snailshell (aka- "Getrag").

It's all covered in the thread Smoothie indicated above.
All of your questions will be answered here.
Basically, the best way to do it involves dropping the transmission to replace the joints on the shift linkage where it meets the transmission. Some people are able to snake their hands above the transmission while it is in place, but if you're not familiar with what's going on, that may end just being frustrating. _________________ 78 924 NA

Do not forget the shifter bar and the shifter. Sometimes they oval and you cannot get in the correct gear. Change all of the bushings.
While in the car remove the shifter cover and look inside. Check for loose parts. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

That actually may be a problem. I was sitting moving the shifter and it actually hits something before it goes into the second gear which may be causing the grinding?
Also, what loose parts should I be keeping an eye for? And where specifically are the bushing located? Ive never worked with a shifter before.
