|
|
I am working with IMI to adapt one of their existing gear reduction starters for the 931. I have sent a sample to them and expect to have a solution within the next 5-10 days. Early pricing indications are somewhere in the $215-$260 range for a single unit, not sure yet on volume discount. These prices compare favorably to rebuilt Bosch units.
If anyone else is interested, let me know, and I'll see what we can do re: a group buy. Otherwise, I'll post the particulars once I have everything sorted out. FWIW, these starters should also work for the 924S and the early 944 (and probably the later versions too, although I don't have a way to conclusively verify it). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made

What exactly is a gear reduction starter? _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

Exactly how it sounds.
There's normally a small electric motor that is connected to a planetary gearset, which reduces the speed and increases the torque of the shaft of the motor.
This is the in-vogue way to do starters nowadays, since it results in the the ability to use a much smaller motor than would otherwise be necessary. For example, you can use a motor with permanent field magnets rather than a coil field magnet due to the smaller torque requirements, resulting in a smaller, lighter package. _________________ 78 924 NA

Ideola you da man!
you must be a very powerful and infuential person to get these manufacturers to build new products for our very small part of the automotive aftermarket.
a great big thanks for you efforts! _________________ "Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves. "

You're a funny guy, Rocco! Not powerful or influential, beyond my persistence and willingness to throw money down a hole I call the UWB project
But it has been fun pushing the envelope and getting some of this stuff done. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

THis is what Dan is talking about:
The motor to the right is from a 931.
Here I took it apart to show you the gear reduction unit:
The head piece is flipped around, oops!
This is a shot of the machined flange to fit the motor to a 924 n/a, the six holes are for indexing.
I bought this from Applebit a couple of years ago. He may chime in on it's origin. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I'd be up for anything that takes the drain off the battery when hard-starting happens. (as it does to us all.) _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

FWIW, I contacted britishstarters.com last week and have yet to get a reply. Being the impatient guy I am, I began looking at alternatives and came across IMI. They have been very responsive and helpful so far, and based on the questions they asked about dimensions and particular details of our starter, seem to have pretty good knowledge re: the various permutations...
Anyway, once my starter gets out to Cali, I hope to have pricing in short order. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

cool.... britishstarters.com is run by one man I do believe - although this one man is an enthusiast of any older vehicle, so I suggest him if the IMI does not come to your liking - one of those places will certainly beat the other for pricing... _________________ Classic British Sports Car Restoration v6 + v8 Engine Conversion Swaps

I see different part numbers for NA and 931 (and auto trans), but is that simply the rating, or are they physically different? Bottom line Dan, is what you looking at going to be applicable to a NA?

NA starters rotate in the opposite direction of 931, 944, and 968 starters. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
