Hey guys from British Columbia, Canada,
I'm new to the forum and looking for some help. My father bought a brand new Porsche 924 back in 1979 and drove it up until 1985 when he parked it in the garage and never touched it again. It was never properly stored, he just parked it and that was that. The car has 37000 Km and he kept a trip log documenting fill ups and mileage. Aesthetically, the car looks like it came off the lot other then a small dent on the right rear panel next to the light. The inside is flawless. I've included some pictures, i'll take some better ones next time I visit the parents.
Anyways, he has given me the car and I would like to get it running again. I have access to a shop with a hoist and all the tools necessary. However, I know very little about cars. I will be working on this myself and hopefully be able to inlist the help from a few knowledgeable friends.
My question is, where do I start? I really appreciate all your guys help. I would really love to get the car running again so that I could pick up my dad in his old porsche and take him out for dinner.
Talk to you guys soon.

Hey Ketchup, welcome. Need to have the img before and after pics to see them,
try hitting preview to make sure your post is OK.
Fuel system will hopefully be the worse thing ahead of you.
I've been dealing with mine for awhile, cleaned out alot of
junk out of my tank, I think there's still more.
For some reason it doesn't like dirty gas. _________________ I got nothin'

To get your pictures from your computer in "a format the internet understands," in otherwords, host it on
tinypic.com
upload your photo there, and post the "IMG" code here. |

Search around. There are a bunch of topics regarding toofah resurrection. Main thing will be draining/cleaning fuel system *BEFORE* trying to start it up. But brakes will be no good, tires junk, all rubber and belts will need replacing.
You have a good project there. Not difficult but you will need to do your homework. Oh, and welcome aboard. This is the best place to be to accomplish your goal with that car. |

Where are you in the Okanagon ?
You'll find it a bit of a challenge finding some of the things you'll need.
I found Lordco to be a good source for parts. Sometimes they are the wrong ones but they'll change them or can order them.
There are good parts places in the states as well. AZ autohaus comes to mind.
Good luck. _________________ '78 924 NA with Collector plate

25 years is a long time.
Before trying to start it I would do this:
- Disconnecting the battery (order a new one)
- Pull the plugs
- Squirt a bit of oil into the cylinders and turn the engine around by hand a couple times
- Inspect/replace the plugs
- Check the plug/coil harness for cracks, moisture or corroded connections.
- Check/replace the distributor cap and rotor.
- Visually inspect fuel and vacuum hoses for cracks
- Drain and clean out the fuel tank
- Change air, oil and fuel filters.
- Change oil
- Drain, flush and refill coolant
- Inspect timing belt and accessory belts
- Clean up the ground spots
- Re-install battery and check if it starts
- If it fires keep an eye on oil pressure, water temp and charging voltage while you let it idle until the cooling fans kick in.
- Stop the engine and grab a beer while you plan to change the timing/acc belts
If you are lucky it will fire and run smooth, if not report back
After the engine runs, you still need to replace brake fluids, probably get new brake pads and maybe rotors if they are badly rusted, check all the electrics/lights etc.. grease up accelerator, clutch and E-brake cables, gear shift connections, check for exhaust leaks, order new tires etc, etc...
It's a long list, but if you are lucky you will end up with a very nice and reliable 924
NOTE! Get some more advice on how to clean up the fuel tank and how to flush out the fuel system, I'm no expert on how to do this right. _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 na My 924 blog

As above plus one more thing: you'll need tires. Don't be surprised if the piston in the fuel dizzy is stuck.

Before you go too far you should get a copy of the Haynes 924 service manual. A quick read through will explain a lot of things about the car. You can't go wrong and you will need it for all the technical info it provides about how to set things to run properly and do testing if they don't. _________________ '78 924 NA with Collector plate

I"m in EXACTLY the boat. In fact, in the coming weeks, I will be posting a spreadsheet of what we will be doing. We, being my brother and I. We're resurrecting my 79 924 that has 8k miles (13k km). 356speedster outlines what we plan on doing, except for the tires which was mentioned a couple posts later.
The resurrection is planned for July 6,7 and 8 - just before the Porsche Parade scheduled nearby for that weekend.
I'll our experience and include any unexpected things that you might consider should you not have done your work yet.
Good Luck. _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)

wheres the relish??
and also, nice goddamn porsche. i recently obtained one identical to yours (minus the paint and interior) and it is a really fun car to wrench at. you'll have lots of fun. start by cleaning the fuel system, testing your system pressure, and making sure the bushing at the shifter linkage isnt old or loose, or cracking, or detiorating in any way. have fun, and dont blow yourself up.
p.s. if you're using a quick start spray, make sure to lift the airsensor plate to let the solution get sprayed into your throttle body. _________________ '79 924
