Sure, "these pieces are in fact reusable."

Don't make it true, tho.

Confused with the Dan's Official 924 Board ARP Rod Bolt Thread©?

I'm fairly certain the stock thickness is .050" or .051", somewhere in that range...haven't had a chance to dig up the documentation on it yet, but that's what I recall, and I know for a fact that the composite HG I had made up by Lubbock was .050"

I'll get an opinion from Cometic on reusability, and then you can each make your own choices.

Gegge, I'll ask about pricing on the 5-layer, but in light of the above, let me know for sure if it's necessary or if 3-layer will suffice.

I'll get around to updating the totals a little later today...

bass gt has re-confirmed interest, but still waiting on an exact count. That brings us to 31 confirmed, 14 in process, for a grand total of 45. We need 5 more commits, perhaps more depending on what happens with bass gt and Raceboy.

For anyone interested in a 5-layer gasket, add $20 to the 3-layer price. Gegge, get back to me and let me know if you want 1 add'l 3-layer, or if you really need a 5-layer at .086". I am reasonably confident that the stock specs are .050", although I was unsuccessful this weekend at trying to confirm that in a documented source.

Regarding re-usability, here is the answer direct from the source:
Quote:
“NO” we do not recommend reusing our MLS gaskets!

When the embossment is originally torqued the gasket is compressed flat giving it the max sealing capabilities. After heat cycles it will not maintain the same sealing strength after that torque is released.

I take it that this is for the head gasket only?
Not valve stem seals and so on?

That is correct, this is for the GASKET ONLY, NOT the entire head seal kit.

I assume that the gasket thickness refers to the compressed measurement, the effective thickness after the head has been torqued to spec.

Measuring 2 used gaskets, unknown brand possibly original and an OEM Goetse gives a compressed thickness of 1.6 and 1.7mm respectively. Additionally I have recorded the figure of 1.6mm used to calculate CR. IIRC that gasket was OEM Elring.

Maybe others can also measure theirs to confirm.

If you`re not positive that Cometic`s dimension is the installed compressed one, now would be a good time to verify.

A quick trip around the Internets revealed a number of sources saying the MLS gasket can be reused (or, uncompressed and re-torqued) 4 to 5 times.

Busted again for smart-assery. Will I ever learn?

Guess not.

I've sent a clarifying question regarding the thickness and will post back when I receive an answer.

As of right now, the trip to Cleveland is still on for tomorrow to drop off the block, heads, and stock gasket.

I'm interested in a couple of them. I'll consult with my mechanic for the thickness I need.
If I'll find someone interested in a cometic HG here in a day or two, I'll increase the quantity of pieces in my order.
