For those who say you can't get a lot of horse out of the 924, they have not actually tried to do it. I've found practical and inexpensive ways to do it.
Here is the breakdown of my friends 924 and some of the easy mods we have done:
924 car: $400
All Parts from parts car: $500
Gaskets: $100
$1000 = Running very nice car... heck of a deal
0-60 mph = 10.0 seconds
Modified Fuel system: $200
Aluminum Flywheel: $200 - eBay baby!
5 Speed: $250 - Better Gearing
Vacuum Mods: FREE
Ignition Distributor Switch to early model: FREE
Underdrive Pully: FREE
Header: $124 - eBay again!
Deleted AC System: FREE
Remove Back Upper Seat: FREE
Other Misc Weight Removal: FREE
Under $800 in mods. Total spend on car: $1800
0-60 mph = 7.7 to 8.2 seconds
We havent even put a cam in the car yet or P&P'd the head or done any internal work to the sucker yet. Thing still can get some free weight reduction done to it. Interesting thing is everything minus the header modification can be done to the turbo'ed model as well. _________________ Classic British Sports Car Restoration v6 + v8 Engine Conversion Swaps

Long time! Yeah I remember when we both could not figure out why our engines were not making power. Ah the memories.
Oh yeah that is the WUR fromt the audi 5000 correct? I was going to do that... forgot about it. Hmmm
I need to swap off the VW throttle body and go with a 5000 unit. I think the VW unit is not giving the proper vacuum to the dist to get the advance moving at the right time. I need to check it again... just a suspect at the moment.
The other stuff is the elimination of the EGR system basically correct?

Thanks from the topic, it's very interesting. Please everyone, who has done something like that for your porsche 924, please wrote your experience in here.
Applepit: have you considered to change that camshaft?
http://www.integralcams.com/924.htm
I just got some catcams porsche 924 specs, I've been considered to get cam which is allmost equal cam with that integralcams stage2 cam.
Stage 3 can be a good choise too, at least if stock valve springs can handle that big lift? |

Yeah... the Integral Stage II is on my list, also. That looks like a really sweet profile.
Check out Elgin Cams, too... they seem to have a really well thought-out approach to cam profiles. _________________ 82 924 N/A -

All the time. Has low end torque- I can start the car in 3rd gear (and I have a lot without realizing it) without any trouble.
Start out at 40 mph in 5th gear and pass cars like they were standing still.
No trouble driving in heavy traffic- even with the new aluminum flywheel.
My Saturn ran a 14.8 in the 1/4 mile with $1500 worth of mods. for another $1000 I can add a turbo and get the thing down into the mid 13 second range. The stock 924 runs high 17 seconds in the quarter... Not impressive. Now with the $800 we spent on my friends 924 his car should run the quarter in 15.7. Pretty good increase for $800. Respectable enough to hold against a 1989 Porsche 944. We're gonna do more to his car, but this year it's just a WTB: 944 brakes for the new 968 wheels going on the car... dang that makes the '24's look sexy... _________________ Classic British Sports Car Restoration v6 + v8 Engine Conversion Swaps

Here is the link to what I have done to my car.
http://www.geocities.com/eturbo924/myprojects.html
Not as fast as Applebit but much quicker than stock.
All in all about 1K spent. I would report it is about as fast as a stock 931.
Like I reported some where else.. I had an impromtu race with a 931 back in the fall on 495. Ran from about 60 to 100 and I was right on him... with a bit in reserve. So no doubt I am making good power.
I hope to put in 9.3:1 pistons some time soon. Just do not want to do it myself. After changing out the entire drive train in my 1980... I am tired of projects! Need a break.
Oh and plan to try out the Audi WUR/fuel regulator some time soon.
Here is the page I made on others projects that have been reported on in mags. http://www.geocities.com/eturbo924/Enhancements.html

Interested in the throttle body mod (audi 5000).
What specific model is it from and does anyone know what the equivalent european model was called?
Also, does the bursch header save much weight?
I plan to run a polished and ported 9.3:1 with 270-280 cam, the best possible mass produced free flow exhaust(with the biggest weight saving)
Then I aim to fit an eaton supercharger(need to look into the implications further), intercooler, fit discs to the rear, lower by 2-3cm etc .
Somewhat like someone else on this sight who's name escapes me!
Don't at this stage have a clue how much the blower will cost, and the fitment details
Also contemplating carrera gt body conversion.
(well it should be pumping out circa 200bhp, so I may as well make it look a bit, well a lot harder!).
Conversion will boil down to the weight, as by looks of it some of the panels fit over the old!
Lightweight sports seats, replace the split dash with a repro fiberglass one.
Anything I've missed??? |
