I posted this in the general discussion by mistake,I had intended, to only post it here....I get lost sometimes...
Has anyone here converted their open diff to a true LSD,using a method such as this.
I bet you never seen this before

I am. Works well, not as well as a proper ZF plate type but not bad. I have heard the stories about these units but as long as you do the prep work its ok. Works well as locker at launch but not as good when unloading wheels in corners.
Cheers

Question: Was LSD an option with manual cars and standard on autos? This is for some reason what I thought but I dont know why I thought this. _________________ 1977 924 2.0 Auto |

I've never heard of an auto with LSD. The only gear box that even offered it as an option was the snailshell. I don't believe the pre-944 audi-based 924 gearboxes ever had LSD as an option from the factory. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Recall reading something like that in the haynes. More BS than wishful thinking.
Am positive that if you jack your rear wheels up, handbrake off, trans in N, and rotate one wheel the other will turn in the opposite direction, indicating an open wheel diff. With a LSD both wheels will rotate the same way.
FYI the 924 and 944 autos are essentially the same transmission, Audi/VW 087. Minor differences such as ports for the cooler but the internals are identical, and AFAIK the ratios too. The diff ratio may be taller though. |

Yes, this is the case, and many have reported it to be unsuitable for the 924, unless you REALLY enjoy winding out in 4th gear. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
