Was doing a search for the P9201 on google and came up with this:

http://www.arnnworx.com/new_tensioning_tool.htm

Anyone here use this to do their belts?

920x for $150 is much cheaper than the P9201 for ~$700!

it seems like this place has a kit that will complete the full front engine service and they are decently priced compared to genuine porsche tools.

Does anyone know if these tools actually live up to getting the job done right, and will last more than a couple service intervals?

If so, I may be able to afford to put my car back on the road!!

Thank you for helpful responses!

The guy in the video sure seems nice and knowledgeable, but I don't know anyone who has used this setup (although I do know a couple of guys who use the 'twist'). Are you a member of PCA? I bet there is a member in your area with the Porsche tool.

HE WHOSE NAME that we do not mention has/had the arnworx kit, and wrote about using the tools, if you can trust his impressions.

I have seen P9201 tools sell on eBay for $300. I would rather spend $300-$400 for a P9201 alone, then get a set of generic tools for $150 (plus shipping).

Novice mechanics seldom use the tool correctly or even follow the correct procedure. Worse yet they drop the tool and upon returning it neglect to tell the owner.

The twist method works fine, but you have to be willing to check the belts often. The original 944 procedure was the twist.

Customer car: Be a pro, know how to use the tool, and follow the procedure to the letter.

Your car: twist them often.

making mistakes is the worst feeling in the world.

in this case, I already know that one minor mistake can cost the whole engine.

right now, I need my car back on the road, so the front end must be done.

this guy at arnnworx seems pretty mechanically savvy to me, and he has several articles regarding issues on the 951 and 944.

can anyone send me a link to a post by HE WHOSE NAME we do not mention that talks about using the tools?

also, what do you guys mean by "twist"?

thanks

You should be able to twist the long run of the timing belt with a thumb and forfinger about 90 degrees. The balance shaft belt should be. . .uhh. . .a bit looser!

I bought his whole kit, but the one with the "kriket" belt tensioning tool, and it works fine. All his stuff is very well made and worth the money.
