Considering this swap for Shaggy. Worthwhile? Any pitfalls? _________________ Toofah King Bad

i've done it on my car mainly because i needed more offset but they are lighter...also some wheels wont fit anymore...but some other wheels will fit with no spacers...so it changes stuff...but not in a radical way.
anyways...if you change the arms you will have to change the spring plates...wich means everything comes down...and you have to mess with the torsion bar index to get it right. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Definitely worth it in the weight savings department. I had no problem picking up and moving around an entire 944 rear suspension assembly, but I could not pick the 931 five lug steel setup I pulled off of one of my donors earlier this week. IMO, if you're going to go to the trouble to upgrade your bushings and stuff, you might as well swap it out. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

They are beautiful castings. I've got a set (sans the hard lines, sigh) that I was thinking of putting on mine. That reminds me, I need to measure the offset of my wheels to see if I need spacers, etc. _________________ Stefan

Why? They're not hard to remove and you have to take them off anyway to install those 30mm welties Should be a dime a dozen too if you don't have a set already. But the alu spring plates are definitely different than the steel ones... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Eh, they usually come with the arms. There are a number of people on Craigslist parting 944's quite often. _________________ Stefan

It's one of the best upgrades I've done to my cars. Nice, more rigid and lighter, what else would you want.
But only the rears as I don't like the front alloy arm achilleus heel: the ball joint _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

After looking through the PET a bit, it appears that swapping stub axles and hubs will also be required.
Agreed? _________________ Toofah King Bad

Yes, you will need the entire rear trailing arm assembly including the hub/stub that is on the trailing arm side, as well as the spring plates. You may or may not also need the calipers and parking brake assembly depending on what you are installing onto. If you're doing a 4- to 5-lug swap you definitely will need these items. If you're just swapping out trailing arms on an existing 931 steel setup, you probably don't. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Don't forget that the shock mount on the arms is a different diameter, you'll need the longer axles, you'll need the alloy arm parking brake shoes/springs/guts, and I believe the parking brake cable is different too.
Basically, change everything except the torsion bar carrier housing (which you only need because of the G31 trans mounts), brake calipers and discs. _________________ 1980 931S

I believe the parking brake cable ends are the same for all 5-lug. I believe the axle length is the same on pre-87 NA 944s, but different on 951s and post-87.
But yes, to make things simple, it should be no problem to source a complete 944 rear torsion carrier assembly, and simply swap out the carrier itself (due to your snailshell), particularly since you have those 30mm torsion bars to install. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I think it's the length of the parking brake cable that is different. Going from memory on that though.
Axles are definitely longer. Alloy arms (aka late offset arms) move the hubs ~21mm further out which means you need ~21mm more axle to reach them.
Either way, the shocks are the non-bolt in part. The top mount will be one diameter and the bottom mount another. You can make up a sleeve or maybe press in different bushings etc. Still a pain. _________________ 1980 931S

Ahhh...excellent clarification Nick, Thx.
Regarding the shocks, I didn't recall that difference, but now that you mention it, I do seem to remember a few threads around that discussed an easy way to make sleeves...prob'ly worth a search...
Thx! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
