Just a few basic questions on my 1987 Porsche 924S Automatic.

What replacement fluid do you use for your Power Steering fluid?
I beleive ATF is supposed to be used? Any special brands?

Also, my manual is from anothe model, can you confirm the exact amount of oil to use for an oil change with a new filter?

What brand of oil?
What oil filters do you prefer?

thanks very much for the help.

Hi Frank

1. Use ATF Dexron for the PAS, can't recommend a particular brand.
2. Engine & Filter Capacity is approx 6 litres.
3. Engine oil? That's going to be argued over for a long time as everybody has their own preferences. Porsche produce a list of approved oils each year, and it's pretty large with all the major brands. I run Mobil 1 15w50 in one of my 924s and Castrol 10w40 Magnatec in the other. Some will advise synthetic, some semi-synth.
4. Oil Filters: personally use Porsche ones or Mahle (OEM) if a genuine one not available.

Hope that helps a bit.

Valvoline 20W-50 with German made Mahle or Mann or Bosch oil filters.

Notice how I wrote German made? Oil filters are made everywhere with everyones names on them. Some people swear by German Purolators, but the US, Chinese, and Mexican ones appear to be junk.

The other day I was in the local Kragen Auto Parts Store, and I looked at some Fram fuel filters, as I need a replacement for my 95 VW Golf GL. I was surprised to find an unimpressive looking piece marked "FRAM, made in China" in the box.

There's a lot of talk about how the newer oils do not contain the additive ZDDP any longer, which forms a protective coating on the metal parts.

There are a few racing oil manufacturers that still add ZDDP (Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate) to their oil, or you can buy it as an additive to add yourself.

Here is one I am considering:

I have been using Castrol GTX 20W50 myself, but I am sure there are many other fine engine oils out there - Redline, Swepco, etc.

I believe the 924S will take about 7 quarts of oil with a fresh filter installed. I have been using the K&N filters, but I have a couple of Mahle filters on my shelf also. Just make sure they have the anti-drainback valve on them.
