|Last night I dropped the tranny out of the 85 924 here. I'd read and asked questions beforehand and I gotta say in the end the job was dead easy. Took me about an hour and a half.
I ended up unbolting the shift lever from the tunnel - it wouldn't pop out. I didn't need an assistant. The exhaust doesn't have to come off, just the hanger on the tranny. In the end it all worked to spec and watching that baby drop straight down made me feel pretty good about life.
So thanks, gents for the advice.
One more thing: the one that came out had an R (D?) on it. The one going in has a V. What's the difference? Haynes says the 5-speed is coded VR. Is that either/or?
I'l be putting it in tonight.
'84 944 - all-weather workhorse.
'83 944 - still looks like ass.
'87 944 - wifey's DD, alive and well.
'80 924 - tuned by son #1.
'78 924 - blown up by Scottie.
'77 924 - gift from friend. Future project...
