The passenger-side window on my 1988 924S has stopped working. It has been a little reluctant for a while, and I noticed the cabin lights dimmed when I pressed the switch (either side).

Is this a case of remove, clean and replace, or should I suspect something else?

thanks

Yes, I've done both of my window motors (removed. cleaned, reinstalled). They didn't both need work at the same time, so I was able to give myself a couple years off in-between. It was the passenger side that needed work first on mine too (opposite of your passenger side, but still the one that's used less).
I didn't remove the entire mechanism, or even the entire motor - left the gear part of the motor in place, just removed 2 or 3 screws that hold the electrical section to the geared section, took the electrical part out for a cleaning and re-lube. Reinstall was tricky the first time, and a breeze the second time - trick is to have the window about half-way up while re-inserting the motor (there's a worm-drive shaft-gear that goes in first (, but not seperately from the rest of the motor that should still be in your right hand)) and pull up-down on the window a bit with one hand while getting the motor inserted and lined-up with the other.

More recently, in the past couple weeks, I had to replace a dead window switch, and was suprised to find the window moves much quicker with the new switch (compared to when the old switch was still working ). I had been removing and cleaning that switch, so you'd think the cleaning would restore the conductivity of the contacts, but apparently there can still be a good amount of resistance. -So if the motor's still slow after cleaning, a new switch might get it back up to speed.

Final tip - do not put grease on any fuzzy insulation parts of the window runners (same applies to sliding-glass doors and any other sliding window). That only tends to slow them more.

I have also found the transmission to be dry and cause a sticky/nonfunctioning window. If Smoothies electrical cleanup tips don't work, check the transmission before replacing the motor.
