I am going to change the tranny fluid this weekend. I dont have a haynes yet, waiting on it to arrive. Local auto zone didnt have one.
Couple quick questions.
How much of what fluid would you recommend. I think it only takes 2 quarts so I would like to get top end synthetic. Not sure what to use.
Engine oil. I was thinking of using full synthetic but I had heard somewhere that it might be bad to switch an older engine to synthetic if it had been running regular its whole life. Any truth to the myth?
Thanks a ton guys. _________________ 82' 931 5 spd (not sure which tranny)

A lot of 931 owners use 15w-50 Mobil One.
I prefer to stick to dino oil in the tranny. The type of oil depends on whether or not your car has a limited slip diff. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

I have been running Royal Purple in my tranny, seems to be doing well.
Here's a tip though. . .make sure you can break the filler plug BEFORE you drain it.

I have read that atleast 15 times now. Take out top nut first. LOL. Funny thing is, I so would have taken out the bottom first if not reading it and hearing you guys say it.
I am thinking red line or royal in the rear, and some mobil 1 in the engine. _________________ 82' 931 5 spd (not sure which tranny)

Yours should have the Audi 016G MB - same as mine and all other '81-'82 USA/Can 931s.
A "6Q", probably found just after the serial number, would indicate an 016G with "differential lock".
The ser.# should either look like "016G nnnnn MB" or "016G nnnnn 6Q" (if I'm interpreting this right). _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

I shall now bow. The amount of knowledge you have smoothie is insane. If you need a computer ripped apart, I am your man. Cars, not so much yet.
When you say diff lock, do you mean limited slip or am I retarded.
I am sorry for all the questions. I want to soak up as much knowledge as I can from everyone. I want to be able to point at things and say what they are.
Cool thing is when my buddy got rid of his 944 turbo, he gave me all his books. Bosch bible and all. I am going to be reading it to death. _________________ 82' 931 5 spd (not sure which tranny)

Nah, I just know some stuff. The other 90% I know where to look up.
Thanks for the 'puter offer, but I'm not shy about ripping them apart either - did 20 years hard time in the field, finishing up as a sr. programmer-analyst - systems officer. -But not to be too impressed - they do tend to fancy-up the job titles at banks..
Yes, what Porsche calls "differential lock", normal people call a limited slip diff. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

I spent 10 years in the navy on subs as an electronics tech. Now I work for Intel as an electical engineer. The electronics on the car, no worries. The mechanics on the car, scare the shit out of me. I helped my buddy work on his 87 944 turbo and just remember the pain. Always the pain. _________________ 82' 931 5 spd (not sure which tranny)
