I put MSD gear (Blaster coil and MSD6 box) into my '81. Pretty simple upgrade.

Try this - worked for me.

Cheers,

well i want to get a little more performance out of it
what will a new ignition box do performance wise
i know that a hoter spark means more power so thats why i would get a better coil
but does the msd replace the original ignition control unit

You might get one or two horsepower out of it. Your money would be far better spent renewing ALL vacuum lines and making sure your CIS is functioning properly.

Then, when you still yearn more power, do the suspension instead!

Without other mods you won't notice anything... don't believe all the marketing hype. If you're planning on other mods down the track then go for it, but just don't expect any appreciable difference with a coil and MSD alone.

You might notice an improvement if you do the standard before and after test.

Test your car with old, worn out cap, rotor, plug wires, sooty plugs, etc.

Replace everything with shiney new parts, including the ignition system.

Re-test, and claim the increased performance was due to the ignition system, rather than the new plugs, wires, old distributor, etc.

Or, you could believe reality and follow Rasta and pocketscience's advice.

I put the MSD Digital 6 along with an MSD Blaster II coil into my 931 and there was no power gain by itself. I needed the rev limiter and a bit more spark when I inject methanol and water.

If I owned a 924 NA and I wanted power like you do I'd do this in sequence - but I don't drive one of those so I'm guessing based on just having had the same goal with other cars - if I'm off base just holler:

1. Follow Rasta and Pocketscience's advice. Add ons don't make sense if the system is failing.
2. Now you're up to stock performance. Notice the difference? Now start going beyond stock with:
a. Get stiffer or new shocks - feels good huh?
b. Pull your cat free up the air flow somehow, maybe try something at the intake side - feels good huh?
c. Port and polish it - feels good huh?
d. Methanol and water injection - no difference so don't expect one get a vaccuum switch
e. Advance your timing - item 'd' might cool the beast if it was detonating - feels good huh?
f. Start praying with this one - If it's not enough power and you're daring try nitromethanol 10% in your booze can but be careful it can destroy your car if you're greedy
f. Add nitrous - mmm it feels so good - boom - oops. Sorry.
