Conventional wisdom says to use a pin spanner to hold the balance shaft sprockets when you loosen the bolt. I am not conventionally wise.
You will have to remove the sprockets to replace the seals, or to take off the rear timing cover. (necessary for removal of the water pump)
My solution was to hold the sprocket with an old timing belt. You can make a strap wrench out of the belt and a pair of vice grips.
You must use only an old belt for this job. The belt can rip under the force of loosening the nut.
If the belt breaks you can use large chanel lock pliers to hold the sprocket, using the old belt to proctect the teeth of the sprocket. This works a little better than the strap wrench method if you have a big pair of pliers and room to use them. (it may be a little harder to get them over the bottom sprocket than the top)

I think a pin wrench would work too... _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev
