On my application, I know for a fact it is not the bushings on the front of the sfiting rod or the back. I have it disconected (Someone was kind enough to have already created and access opening to that part of the transaxle ) and the actual actuating rod itself is what is locked in place.

I can now source brass bushings for the rear shifter coupling on the G31. $14 for a pair. I've just installed these in the 941 and they are freakin' awesome. These are direct fit replacement for the sloppy plastic factory bushings, part number 911.424.223.03.

So what keeps the bushings from exiting out the side? I would suspect there should be something retaining their movement....

I've got some shifting issues. Its difficult to find gears and the shifter feels very loose but I eventually find the right spot without too much grinding of gears. I plan to do everything necessary in the FAQ and the shift lever refurbish if need be. Anybody had similar symptoms? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I have this exact issue. It's drivable but it's annoying when it's hard to tell the difference between first and third or second and fourth. Let me know if you found a fix?

Just replace the bushings at the shifter and then inspect the ones at the rear and expect to replace those.

Is there any how-to anywhere on the boards for replacing all these linkage parts? I searched for one, but was unable to find one.

I'm pretty un-savvy when it comes to cars, but I'm really trying to learn. As detailed a guide as possible would be nice for me, but I do have a mechanic friend who can help me out in the process.

Should I buy all those parts that were listed on page 2?

Here's the pictures from my rebuild (I had the transmission and torque tube out)

Combined with the text from the first page, you should get an idea of what you're working with.

To Joe B and others,

This is a classic case of "the lazy man works twice as hard!"

Go ahead and drop the gearbox to get this job done. Yes, it is possible to do it with the gearbox in place (sometimes via extreme strategies, like cutting the body), but removal of a snail is quite easy, and will render the bushing refresh 10x simpler. This is also a great time to disassemble, inspect, and relubricate your CV joints!

I do not know what tool to use to removal the rear axles. Haynes mentions a "splined key", which I don't know what that is.

Also they mention that a hex-head can be used but they don't say the size.

Could anyone help?

You need to crawl down there and eyeball what you are dealing with. CV joints have differing bolts based on application. Buy quality tools.

I took it all apart and I didn't even have a bushing back there!

Really interested. I have a '81 Tubo with Getrag g/box. Often it is really hard to put into 1st. Is this part of the problem?

Thanks
