Posted: Fri Aug 03, 2007 6:59 pm Post subject: I need help, Ram-air intake for an '89 626 |
|
|
I have finally made up my mind to turn my '89 626 Turbo into a Ram-air intake. I want to mount a single hood scoop and run the ram-air system through it. The problem that I am stuck on is actually running the "duck work" to the intake. I do have the stock inter-cooler. (If that is needed info.)
I want this to look decently "professional" looking if possible for the lower price. The stock air box is located on the driver side of the engine bay. Would I honestly be better off just putting the scoop directly over the box? I just don't want to do that honestly...
The only thing that I can come up with is to mount the scoop in the center of the hood and run the duct under it. Putting to rubber gaskets of some sort there to create a seal when the hood is closed. I just don't know how to mount the ductwork in place there so it won't move all over the place...
If mounted like that, should the duct go into a hole cut into the stock air box? Or would I be better off making a custom box? Or would it be better to mount a custom airbox directly under the scoop position? Also, where exactly should the duct connect to as far as the manifold/intercooler is concerned? _________________ Hey, I'm no mechanic but I try and don't half-a** anything...even if it's a mistake. |

How on earth did this discussion end up here? I know it is a Performance Upgrades section, but still, it should be at least loosely related to 924 performance, no? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

What is a 626? I'm assuming from the numbering it is some sort of Mazda? Like a 323? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Ok, I posted here because I figured that someone might know something about Ram-air intakes...does it really what make/model my car is to post here? I'm just looking for some help. The mazda forums don't say muck about this subject and i figured that I could find help elsewhere as well. I guess this isn't the place for an average guy to get some help...I hope that i can reveiw this post tomorrow and actually see someone with a heart... _________________ Hey, I'm no mechanic but I try and don't half-a** anything...even if it's a mistake. |

All lame jokes aside.
I think you should post some pictures of your engine bay and show us how its set up. This is a 924 based forum, and majority here have great automotive knowledge in general, but it would be quite difficult to, from a 100 word paragraph build you a ram air intake system for your mazda.
It's just that this topic is kind of out of left field in this forum. I'd be happy to brain storm some suggestions for you, as would a few others I'm sure, however I have nothing to base my suggestions on. Where is the air box in relation to the turbo, the intake, motor, etc..
It would certainly be easier to build the ram air directly over the air box, assuming its off to the side, it would involve less work and less complication that making a symmetrical ram air in the middle of the hood, however the second option would most certainly look more pleasing.
The other thing you might want to consider, is, is it worth it? I've read many negative thoughts/views(of course not *a lot* of factual information other than "seat of the pants info*) that ram air gives you no significant increase in power unless you are going like 100+ mph. Besides, you have a turbo, that is a ram air intake, maybe just get rid of the air box and run a cone filter into the fender well in hopes of gaining a bit of cooler air instead of the heat soaked air in the engine bay. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Don't bother cutting up your hood, your going to attract way too much attention for little gain.
Spend your money on a boost controller and replacing the factory intercooler. I'd be guessing but your factory boost setting would be fairly conservative at 10psi, Even if you got another 2 psi out from the turbo you would see a markedly better improvement than any ram air will give you.

What I would suggest is if you do decide to upgrade the intercooler to a front mount bar + plate make sure you channel the air into it with some aluminum or fiberglass to box in the air so it can't escape around the edges of the intercooler. This forces the air through and cools your charge air properly.
Boost controller $45
Intercooler $350/$450
Intercooler tubing/welding $100
Silicon and Clamps $50/75 (always get the fiberglass reinforced silicon)
Total cost around $500/650 - for about 10hp/psi you pick up

Alright, cool. I read an article online by a guy that owned a 2.0L Dodge Shadow and he ram a pipe under both sides of his bumper and got quite a boost in power from it. I might just go ahead and do something of that matter...
But you guys seem to be really smart...so I've got another question...what can I do to help keep my block cool? I thought that if I mounted a scoop Simply to pull more air into the engine bay to cool it off...would that have any effect? _________________ Hey, I'm no mechanic but I try and don't half-a** anything...even if it's a mistake. |
