ok just went on a little midnight drive tonight and still having problem with 1st and reverse, they want to grind everytime. So, I have to shut off the car and put it in 1st gear then start it with clutch pedal pressed down of course. all the upper gears don't grind, just 1st and reverse, is there some kind of adjustment somewhere or is the tranny fluid low? how do I change the fluid? god sometimes I wish I bought a 924 with an automatic.

Might need to adjust the clutch. The cable has 2 15mm(?) nuts on the bracket. You adjust them at the bracket to lengthen or shorten the clutch cable, might be worth a try to shorten it, but suppose the 1st gear synchro is worn out that might cause your problem too, which would require dropping the tranny. In the meantime, you can practice starting off in 2nd gear

First gear syncro is gone AND your clutch is out of adjustment or just coming apart.

Stop the car, shift to second, then 1st or reverse.

Don't worry, it isn't under the dash. You can find the cable under the hood. It's just under the brake fluid reservoir tank.

...that doesn't make it any easier to get to.

Alternatively, if you can't engage them, re-arrange them.
