Has anyone seen the commercials on TV for the "Tornado" intake thing? It's a little round band of metal that fits in the intake boot after the air filter, and before the TB. It has little pitched tines, like a fan or propeller, an it's supposed to increase airflow and fuel/air mix.

On the commercial, it showed all the usual BS about get 20 hp, and increase your fuel economy, but Hot Rod magazine did a bunch of tests on bolt on stuff, and these are actually good for up to 10hp(on a big block).

All they really are is a band of sheet metal, with 3 loops on the inside, pitched about 15 degrees, so I went down to my local hardware store, and got 2 square feet of thin gauge sheet metal.

I'm going to make a few of these, I was wondering if anyone wanted one for free.

No. The tornado is bullshit.

You think the Porsche engineers were confused about how to get the gas and air to mix?

Scam a ramma. Swirl in the combustion chamber isn't affected by the area the 'tornado' sits in. Sorry dude!

I believe it will improve air flow.just make sure when you make yours, that you make it so the air will swirl in a conter clock wise direction, for northern hemisphere{North America} , and clock wise for southern hemisphere {Australia}you dont want to fight with the natural laws of fluid dynamics.flush your toilet, you'll see which way to make the air spin. its spins in opposite directions for aussies, the rotation of the earth cases this phenomena.

It is really just something to blow your money. If you think it will increase horsepower, no. It might help atomization a small bit but the theory is only with lower fuel pressures (throttle body is even too much pressure)... carbs are where this might help some at higher RPM's

if you want to see good money for good power, go here:

(Yes, I am going to buy one this year)

I would install 3, 1 right behind air filter, 1 behind metering plate, and 1 behind throttle bodie, to restore the vortex after each of the restrictions.

Jeeze, they must be good to make a 928 beat a 911 like that but why is that woman looking so happy holding one? Am I missing something as far as the uses of this devive?

Jon, you forgot to put a smilie after that comment that you were going to buy an electric supercharger. People might think you were serious.

For those who still believe in "free" horsepower read this article very carefully http://www.autospeed.com/A_0237/page1.html

If you think that a 700 watt fan is going to make any difference, take your vaccum cleaner which is probably at least 1200 watts or your leaf blower, set it to blow and stuff it into your intake, seal it up, fire up and see what happens.

As for the tornado, how do you increase airflow by putting an obstruction in it's way

I cant explain the fluid dynamics of lowered pressure in moving fluids and the faster the fluid is moving the lower the pressure, and the greater the difference between the ambient air and the lower pressure inside the intake the faster the higher pressure air will flow to the lower pressure area. if you swirl the air it is not taking the shortest route, its traveling in a circular motion and traveling many times the distance so it has to go faster to get there, creating a lower pressure by its speed, and the larger the difference between low and high pressure the faster the high pressure will flow to the low pressure area. understand now , I thought so. If you want to now more go here.

it kind of makes you wonder why multi-billion dollar car companies and formula one teams racing cars costing millions of dollars each can't afford to hire real research engineers.

I'll have to find the article I read on this thing were some consumer bought one of these things for his car and found it actually DECREASED horsepower. He published his findings and also the fight that he put up to finally get his money back. He had the same question; how do you improve airflow by putting a restriction in the path?

CBass, buy one and let us know.

ford doesn't make cars, ford makes money. every car I ever had, had at least 1 of the following problems. the door lock doesnt work, the door is falling of the hinges, the odometer/speedometer doesnt work, the interior is ripped to shreds, the mirror is loose and wont stay where you put it, the window doesnt go up/down /move at all, comes off the track, paint looks like %$#@@ ,ac/heat doesnt work , etc ,etc ,etc, . but the motor is still going. if they engineer weak points into the engine, it might fail before you finnish paying for it. why cant engineers use only 3-4 different size bolt heads. because it would put tool companies out of business, once you have 4 sockets and 4 wrenches your tool set is complete. thomas edisons summer house in florida, open to visitors, has four original light bulbs in the dinning room over the table that have been burning for 90 years. I'm lucky if I get a months use out of the bulbs I buy. the longer the car they sell you last, the longer it will be before you buy another. designed obsolescence, strong link weak link, most parts are designed with a weakness, they know how it will fail and about how long it will last. how many of you have a broken drivers side door latch, the thin metal finger that pushes the button that opens the door has broken on my car. Multi billion dollar corps achieve most of what they set out to achieve.providing a comfortable living for the executives and board of directors.
