I just gave cometic.com a ring to see if they can custom make up a 924 MLS gasket, since they aren't listed. Sadly, it seems the answer is no. I was told that they would have to create dies to make the gaskets which would be "very expensive". Bummer.
I guess we're all stuck with stock or tempting fate with copper gaskets. I'm acquiring a stack of stock gaskets and was hoping a re-useable MLS would fix that. _________________ 1980 931S

That sucks! I was hoping to go the same route when I switched to the 931 head and turned up the boost. Copper doesn't really thrill me

I think that if we get a group buy together for ~100 of them, then it would be worth the setup. Yeah right!
The link above lists some kind of universal gasket. I don't know what it's all about, but Cometic definitely does not sell one for us. The rep was plenty friendly, so I have no reason to doubt him. _________________ 1980 931S

Sorry Nick, I just got off the phone with a rep from Horespower Freak. You're right, that's a universal gasket for a Toyota. He wanted to sell me a copper one, but I already have that. Out of a group of three thousand 924 owners you would think that we could find 100, three percent, that would want a head gasket. I'll take two, that makes only 98 to go.

Ok, out of curiousity I called back asking for more details. They would want an order of 150, which would ballpark at $85-$150 each (probably on the lower end), and would be a 3 month turn-around.
All in all, I don't see it happening. _________________ 1980 931S

I'd take 6 gaskets if we get a go. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Back before the Hausbrauen implosion, I went in with Mark Johnston for a composite head gasket from Lubbock Gasket & Supply. We ordered five, and I only paid $100 for mine (I think Tom Cooper was also one of the recipients). Now that they have the pattern, it should be cake for them to produce more.
I have NOT installed this yet, so I can NOT comment on reliability. However, the steel heat ring obviates the need for o-ringing the block or the head, and presumably the sealing problems common to copper will be non-existent.
FYI, the ones we had made up are supposed to compress to .050 (which I believe is a bit thicker than stock). I took this into account when I had Diamond and Holbrook collaborate on the block deck height and the desired compression ratio I was shooting for on my pistons. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I guess we should try different manufactures to see if we can get what we want. _________________ Ryan Moone

Well, don't let the Hausbrauen curse discourage you from talking to the folks at Lubbock.
From what I recall, they were helpful and informative folks, and the price was right too. They apparently can do small runs, so for $100 per HG, how can you go wrong? I see the composite approach as a better alternative to copper or stock, and about the only one since MLS are NOT available at a reasonable cost. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks for the info ideola!
I just talked to one of these fellows and he quoted $95 each with a 2-4 day turn-around and you would have to send them a stock gasket (which I've got plenty in perfect shape). Very reasonable.
Now my question is - what makes them better than stock? He said that the fire rings are steel and crush so they aren't reusable. _________________ 1980 931S
