Hey folks,
I'm finally replacing my amazingly-ill-fitting aftermarket carpet with a stock set from a 924S. No surprise, that the stock set has some fading from black.

Has anyone used automotive carpet dye with success? I once attempted to dye a tan carpet set black with this stuff, which was disastrous... It turned into a lovely muddy brown color. I'm thinking that it should be able to revive a faded black carpet pretty well. Any thoughts?

This is the sort of stuff I'll probably use -

IMO that stuff is no better than good old fashioned Ritt Dye that's a couple of bucks a box.

I remember trying rit on my previous attempt. It didn't get very dark at all and I could rub the dye off with my fingers! Automotive carpet dye is at least specifically made for a synthetic fiber. Rit is marginal even on natural fibers from my experience.

Oh well, guess I'll give it a go and post the results.

Yeah I'd imagine you'd need a dye that's more like paint for synthetic fiber. Just a couple weeks ago I gave the carpet in my Jeep a soaking spray of Clorox bleach and it had no affect on the color - apparently that's synthetic carpeting.
-But I've had good luck with tan colored Rit on my sisal floor mats.

I've had decent results with Rit on black carpets. You want do it in direct sunlight (get the carpet as hot as possible). Once the dye is on, let it in the sun for as long as possible.

After a few days, rinse out the excess with a garden hose, let dry and install.

I have used VINYL SPRAY with great success.
The aerosol type spray vinyl paint available at your local auto store under various brand names. They seem basically similar and some specify suitability for carpet as well as rubber, plastic etc.
I discovered this on a can while repairing and repainting my interior and have used it on the hood lining, door trims and arm rests, console and all carpets as well as faded rear quarter window rubbers. Although it was all black originally it now looks so new and black I`ll swear by the stuff.
My carpets were removed and thoroughly cleaned ( they`re water proof) then laid out flat and sprayed 2 light coats from opposite directions, like spraying anything. They dry quickly and leave no residue. About 3 cans should do a whole car.
My rear hatch carpet that was quite faded previously still looks brand new after 2 years in the hot Aussie sun.
I reccomend testing any spray on a small unseen spot beforehand but in my case had no problem with 2 brands I tried.
Sure it`ll work for you too.

Roger
