I'm in urgent need of a tie rod, but the local companies don't have a listing for them. Does any body know exactly what VW models will fit?

I have used "search" but couldn't find anything other than speculation.

Go here - www.partsamerica.com and enter your year, make and model, then search on tie rod. Select a part, then if the option "See all vehicles this product fits" appears under "For Your Vehicle", click on it (many, but not all items include this option).

I did that, but could only find outer tie rod ends for the '77 924 and here are the other vehicles that use the same outer rod ends -
85-93 Cabriolet
80-84 Jetta
75-84 Rabbit
80-83 Rabbit Pickup
80-84 Rabbit convertible
75-88 Scirroco
80-91 Vanagon

In addition to those, the McQuay-Norris Tie Rod End lists these as other vehicles using the same ends -
75-78 Fiat 131
79-81 Fiat Brava

Thanks Smoothie - that's a good starting point.

If you need an outer tie rod you can drill out the end and use a heim instead, as instructed in the bump steer modification listed in our tech section.

the tie rod end is used on a few VW's, but looking at a parts place here for the actual tie rod it just lists as 924/944...

I am behind the same problem and only alternative that I found was 944 inner rod and VW outer by Ruville products.

Description for 944 inner rod

General:
EAN 4011442588113
Status Normal
Quantity per Packing Unit 1
Packing Unit 1
Criteria:
Fitting Position Front Axle
Outer Thread [mm] M14x1,50
Thread Type with right-hand thread
Length [mm] 345

Description for 924 inner rod

General:
EAN 4011442584368
Status No longer available
Quantity per Packing Unit 1
Packing Unit 1
Criteria:
To Model Year 07/1985
Fitting Position Front Axle
Outer Thread [mm] M14x1,5
Thread Type with right-hand thread
Length [mm] 355

As You can see the 944 has 10mm shorter rod than 924, other parameters are the same. I havent used them but I think I will. I just have to measure on my car if I can use the 944 rod.

I had the same problem on the GT so I ended up installing a couple of tie rods of a 944. Early 944 ones are the same as 924 but are no longer available from the local agents so you have to go for the later 944 units - and they're not cheap. Paul at Autobahn should have some good second hand ones if you're stuck.

Hi there, as far as I understand John H managed to mount new type 944 manual steering tie rods to the 924 rack, am I right ?

also Lemforder catalogue states that 12093 position is for 924 2,0; 924S 2,5 and 944... and org. pn is: 944 347 033 01.

as far as I know some ppl here managed to mount to 924 rack some tie rods from VW GOLF/Rabbit mk2 which are 367mm long with 14mmx1,5 mm outer thread so VW Rabbit mk1 tie rods ends, or 944 power steering tierod ends work.

Does any one know what the the tie rod inner thread in manual steering 944/924S, its 22mmx???
