Typically these smells come up from loose hose clamps or rotted hose back at the fuel tank; sounds like maybe you have already replaced some of these? Make sure also that even the large filler tube hose clamps are tight. This is mentioned in the Tech FAQ, maybe you've already looked there.

Another issue can be leaks from outside into the back of the hatch; since you're painting your car, no doubt you are planning on using a new seal for the hatch? This, along with making sure the latch pins are snug (but not overtight) should help too.

Sometimes those fuel lines with the cloth braid on the outside can have the tube underneath crack. On the outside the braid looks fine but the tubing is crunchy trash. I think there are several lines on the top of the tank that use that cloth-braided tubing stuff (conveniently wedged between the top of the tank and the underside of the bodywork where you can't see or reach unless you drop the tank ) so if you've not checked there, it is a suggestion.

I have seen on a previous 924 I had that the fuel sending unit gasket rotted. Whenever I would fill up or do some hard cornering it would vent into the cabin and I would get a real big blast of fuel vapor. Just a thought.

Not fixable, man. Just sell the car to me.

You might be having exhaust fumes coming in through the tail lights or the hatch. Spray some water at the tail lights and around the hatch and if it enters the cabin that is your problem.
Also, stop eating beans.

Looking back through the history file for my CGT, over the last 20 years there have been a number of attempts to cure this problem.

I don't have any issue with this now. I'm not entirely sure what's fixed it, but try the following:

1) As already mentioned, first adjust the hatch pins/check seal.
2) My fuel tank breather pipe now exits under the car, near the towing hook.
3) If all else fails, try fitting an additional 944 hatch seal p/n 944 512 043 00. The CGT traps more fumes etc than other 924s under it's larger spoiler. The secondary seal must have been found necessary on later 944's with their similarly sized spoilers.

What do you mean by "additional" seal? That part number is the only one I see in PET for the rear hatch. Is your car missing its hatch seal? That would explain a lot.

Doh !! You're right, that's the main seal. The extra seal, not originally fitted to the CGT is pn 'additional gasket' 944 512 463 00.

Because this seal is shown on the publically accessible version of PET as fitted to the 924 with no introductory date, at first I assumed that the one fitted on my car was there from new, but apparently not. I'm not aware of any other RHD CGTs fitted with one- it was fitted as an upgrade.

Hmm, so how is the additional gasket fitted, do you know? I am confused yet intrigued. . .
