What gasket are you going to use ?

When I had a look at doing it this way, the SCE copper gasket, didn't seal to the wall of the bore, so the edge of the 0-ring would be within a millimeter of the edge of the gasket ?

I contacted SCE and they gave the minimum ring to ring spacing, and the minimum ring to edge of gasket spacing, when measured the gap between the bores was about 2mm short to keep within their recommendations.

They said that a figure of eight groove would be more suitable.

We will be using the Reinz head gasket that is included in the rebuild kit from EBS Racing.

The cylinders are honed in preparation for new rings.

Cool Is that the Iskenderian cutter? I saw one go up on ebay a month or two ago for cheap. The wire looks thick (or maybe it's just the close-up)? That will definitely give the stock gasket more bite around the cylinders.

By the way, what the heck are you building this into?!

Yep, thats a iskenderian cutter alright, works excellent, exactly as described. We got it brand new from summitracing, figured it was a good investment., the wire is .040

and for what its going into, well, thats our little secret.

Are you using copper o-rings ?

The problem, with the gap spacing between the cylinder, that I encountered, were that SCE were unsure if a gap of less than 5mm, between adjacent rings, would allow the copper to "stay down" see the drawing below.

If you are using a stainless steel gasket, then this problem, if it does exist, would be worse, as the stainless doesnt deform as well as copper ?

I am loath to use the figure of eight, as SCE recommend, because the number of joins in the wire, would mean more pathways for water leaks.

Was just wondering wether you had come across this problem that SCE brought to my attention.

we're using a stock head gasket, with copper wire.

you got me stumped ???

doesn't o-ringing rely on one highy uncompressable edge, usually the stainless steel o-ring, biting into one very compressable material, usually the gasket ?

If the Reinz gasket has a solid ring of stainless, without any lamination, then the copper ring will be pushed into a "square" within the groove.

I've heard of this done with a stainlees steel o-ring using a standard gasket, where the gasket has a lamintated ring around the cylinders, so it bites into the gasket in the same way as using a copper gasket. But never this way around.

Is this your secret

The stock gasket has a copper ring.

Either way, we're just going to do it. If it doesn't seal properly, we'll take it apart and do it a different way. We're certainly not going to worry about it thats for certain. The stock gaskets metal rings are a crush ring, the copper wire should crush into them just fine. And if not, we'll worry about it when it happens. Seems to me that your overthinking something thats quite simple. If we really wanted to be 'sure' we could just put the old gasket on, torque it down, then loosen it off again and check how it seats into the gasket surface. But we don't care that much. Due dilegence is required in alot of other area's, I'm not going to waste any time with something as minor as worrying if the copper wire we put in compresses into the groove too much.
